Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and Grammy-nominated singer Madison Beer are engaged after a whirlwind romance that began less than a year ago, and his head coach could not be happier about it.
Beer announced the engagement on Instagram on Tuesday, capping a relationship that first surfaced in August 2025 when the two were spotted together at a video shoot. The couple confirmed things roughly two months later with a pregame kiss before Herbert's Chargers faced the Washington Commanders. Now, not long after Beer wrapped her Locket Tour with a final show at Madison Square Garden on July 13, the pair are set to tie the knot, though no wedding date has been announced.
For Herbert, the engagement arrives at a moment when his professional stock is rising, too. The 2025 season was one of his strongest: 3,727 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and a 66.4 completion percentage. He even picked up a vote on the MVP ballot.
The relationship drew public attention in May when Herbert skipped the Chargers' voluntary workouts to join Beer on her European tour dates. In a league where "voluntary" often carries an asterisk, the move raised eyebrows. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh did not blink.
Harbaugh told reporters he not only approved of the trip but practically pushed Herbert out the door. As Fox News reported, Harbaugh joked that his first reaction was to offer Herbert a lift to the airport:
"I was happy he went to support Madison on her music tour. Madison supports him at the football games. He told me he wasn't gonna be here for those two weeks and my first reaction was, do you need a ride to the airport?"
Harbaugh framed the absence as earned. Herbert, he said, is the kind of player coaches rarely have to motivate, and sometimes have to slow down.
"There's times I've wanted to shoo him out of the building. He's at every voluntary, every non-voluntary workout. Same guy that broke his hand and he was here the next day practicing. The next game, stiff arming guys. So, yeah, I was happy. Happy. You know, good balance. Good balance."
That endorsement from a coach known for demanding everything from his players says something about how Herbert has conducted himself in Los Angeles. Heading into his third season under Harbaugh, with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel added in the offseason, Herbert enters 2026 with both a stronger supporting cast and, now, a fiancée.
Beer, 27, has built her career from an unlikely launchpad. In 2012, when she was 13, Justin Bieber posted a link to one of her YouTube cover songs on Twitter. The attention catapulted her into the music industry. She released her third studio album, Locket, in January 2026 and launched the supporting tour on May 11. The run wrapped July 13 at Madison Square Garden, a venue that shares her first name and, by all appearances, a fitting stage for the final stop before a new chapter.
The engagement came not long after that Garden show. Beer shared the news on Instagram, though the details of the proposal, where it happened, how Herbert asked, remain private.
Herbert and Beer have not revealed a wedding date. Given the NFL schedule, any planning will have to work around training camp, a 17-game regular season, and, if Herbert keeps performing the way he did in 2025, a playoff run. The Chargers added McDaniel specifically to maximize Herbert's arm, and the franchise is betting heavily on its quarterback delivering in the year ahead.
For now, Herbert heads into the season with one more reason to keep his work-life balance in order, and a head coach who will apparently drive him to the airport if he needs it.
