A 66-year-old British tourist died after a sudden storm snapped her parasailing line off Benidorm, Spain, dragging her across the sea, and the company running the ride has refused to comment.

The woman and a 47-year-old British man were on a tandem parasailing flight when the weather turned without warning on Monday evening. A powerful gust snapped the cord tethering their parachute to a speedboat, and the wind caught the chute and hauled both of them across the water's surface. The boat gave chase at full speed but could not close the gap. By the time crew members pulled the pair from the sea, the woman had gone into cardiac arrest.

Paramedics treated her in an ambulance on shore before rushing her to Villajoyosa Hospital near Benidorm. Doctors could not save her. Spain's Civil Guard, the national law-enforcement agency, confirmed her death and said its investigation is ongoing. The man suffered minor injuries.

Sky turned black as hundreds fled the beach

Kerriann Blagden, a 40-year-old holidaymaker from Doncaster, England, watched the disaster unfold from the balcony of her beachside hotel. She told The Sun what she saw:

"We were looking out to sea when it happened. The weather just changed all of a sudden and took the parachute off. They then dropped to the sea and the wind caught the parachute again and was dragging them across the sea."

A second witness, who was not named, described the same rapid shift. The sky went dark. Hundreds of holidaymakers grabbed their belongings and ran from the beach. But the storm brought wind, not rain.

"It didn't rain but the wind suddenly got up. The sudden gust of wind broke the rope and they became separated from the boat. The boat tried to chase after them but even going at full whack speed it couldn't catch up."

The tandem parasailing flight cost 75 euros, roughly $84. The couple was dragged what witnesses described as hundreds of yards across rough seas before the speedboat finally reached them.

Civil Guard opens probe as parasailing firm stays silent

A Civil Guard spokesman confirmed the agency received an alert about the accident at 6:50 p.m. Monday.

"Two British nationals, a 47-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman, were injured and taken to Villajoyosa Hospital. The woman's death was subsequently confirmed."

The spokesman added that the Guardia Civil "has carried out the initial steps to clarify the circumstances of the incident, and the investigation is ongoing." Neither the woman nor the man has been publicly identified. Their exact relationship, initially described as husband and wife, remains unclear; later accounts suggested they may have been relatives or friends.

The parasailing company that organized the flight has not been named. When approached, it declined to comment.

Unanswered questions about safety and oversight

Several basic facts remain unknown. No official weather data, wind speed, storm classification, has been released for the time of the accident. Whether the parasailing operator held a valid license, and whether any safety or regulatory inspection preceded the flight, has not been disclosed. The Civil Guard has not said when it expects to finish its investigation or whether it will release findings publicly.

Those gaps matter. A woman paid for a recreational ride on a holiday beach and came home in a casket. The company that took her money will not say a word, and the public still does not know whether anyone checked that the operation was safe before she went up.

When a business sells a ride that puts customers hundreds of feet in the air over open water, accountability should not be optional, and silence is not an answer.
