A Brazilian man died after plunging into his father's grave when the headstone collapsed beneath him at a friend's funeral, police have opened an investigation.

Just after 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the man in his 40s sat on his father's headstone at Sao Jose Municipal Cemetery in the Interlagos neighborhood, about 400 miles north of Rio de Janeiro. The stone suddenly gave way. He crashed into the tomb and was found lying lifeless. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gravedigger Nazare Bravin said the man first asked where his friend's burial would take place, then walked over to his own father's plot before taking a seat on the headstone. The friend had been killed in a traffic accident only the day before. Mourners were already gathered when the collapse happened.

The Sun reported that cemetery staff called the Samu ambulance service and the fire brigade at once. Firefighters later recovered the body. Despite the response, the victim could not be saved.

Police launched an investigation into how the headstone failed and what exactly killed the man. No names for the victim, his father, or the friend have been released.

Council urges extra caution before All Souls' Day rush

Linhares Council issued a public statement of regret and solidarity with the family and friends.

"We regret the incident that occurred yesterday afternoon at Sao Jose Cemetery in the Interlagos neighbourhood and express our solidarity with the family and friends at this time of grief."

The council described the emergency call and the outcome in plain terms.

"The team that works inside the cemetery which was on site called the Samu ambulance service and the fire brigade but despite their efforts to save this man, the victim unfortunately passed away."

Officials also flagged the coming holiday. All Souls' Day, known in Brazil as Dia de Finados, falls each year on November 2. Families traditionally visit cemeteries in large numbers that day.

"With the approach of the All Souls’ Day holiday, there is an expectation of increased activity in the cemeteries of the municipality. Therefore, the council emphasises the importance of taking extra care during visits."

The warning lands after a sudden structural failure left one man dead while he was simply waiting to bury a friend. Basic upkeep and common-sense caution around old stones matter when crowds return to the grounds.

Life can end in an instant, even in a place meant for quiet remembrance, when something as ordinary as a headstone gives way.
