Bear 89, better known as Backpack, took the 2026 Fat Bear Week crown at Alaska’s Katmai National Park after a close final over Bear 910, and the family line of winners got longer.

OutKick reported that Backpack defeated Bear 910 in Tuesday’s final by 103,334 votes to 98,253, a margin of a little more than 5,000.

The online tournament at Katmai National Park and Preserve drew more than 2.3 million votes from around the world. Fans pick the chonkiest brown bears fattening up on salmon before winter, and this year they crowned a familiar face at Brooks Falls.

Backpack is about 20 years old, a regular along the Brooks River, and the son of Bear 435, Holly, the 2019 Fat Bear Week winner. Winning, the coverage noted, runs in the family.

A bracket path built on blowouts, then a nail-biter

His road to the title was not gentle on the early opponents. In round two, Backpack crushed Bear 620 with more than 95 percent of the vote.

The semifinal was tighter. He edged Bear 164, known as Bucky, by 79,945 to 75,805.

Bear 910 arrived in the final after knocking off Bear 909 and the 132 family. The championship round stayed close to the end. Backpack still took it, and with it the 2026 crown.

How a cub on mom’s back became “Backpack”

The nickname is literal. As a cub, he climbed onto Holly’s back while she crossed the Brooks River. The image stuck. So did the bear.

Survival was not always a sure thing. In 2007, as a yearling, Backpack suffered a serious leg injury and spent much of the summer unable to put weight on it. Park staff and visitors were not sure he would make it. The leg healed. He stayed at Brooks Falls and kept showing up for the salmon runs that define Katmai’s fall spectacle.

Holly’s 2019 title already put the family on the Fat Bear Week map. Backpack’s win makes it a mother-son set of champions in the same public vote that has turned Katmai’s brown bears into a seasonal national pastime.

Votes from everywhere, bears in one river

Fat Bear Week is simple on purpose. Cameras and park life at Brooks River and Brooks Falls give the public a look at bears packing on weight for hibernation. Voters cast ballots online. The totals this year topped 2.3 million.

No agency press release or certified results packet appears in the available account, only the reported tallies and bracket outcomes from the OutKick article by Amber Harding. What the numbers show is clear enough: Backpack won the final, won the bracket, and won the week.

Writer Harding’s piece framed the result in plain fan language, a new king of Katmai, the chonkiest of the bunch, and closed on the envy of anyone watching a bear live on fish and fat reserves instead of cable news.

For a country short on shared, low-stakes traditions, a clean vote over which Alaskan brown bear packed on the most salmon weight is a useful reminder: not every contest needs a scandal to matter.
