Mike Wolfe, the longtime host of History Channel's American Pickers, announced the death of his dog Francie Joe in what he called a "tragic accident", the second major loss for Wolfe in less than six months.
Wolfe broke the news on Instagram on Wednesday, sharing a series of photos of the brown and white dog he adopted in 2020. His post carried an unmistakable weight of guilt. He said he feels "very much responsible" for the accident that took Francie Joe's life, though he did not describe what happened or where it occurred.
The dog's death comes after a brutal stretch for Wolfe, who lost his mother, Rita, to cancer in February following a four-month battle. Rita Wolfe died in hospice care with her children at her side. Before that, Wolfe's longtime co-host and friend Frank Fritz died in September 2024.
Wolfe's Instagram post was raw and direct. He wrote that his "heart is shattered in a thousand pieces" and that he never got to say goodbye or comfort Francie Joe "when she needed me most."
The post indicated the death had happened days earlier. The Daily Mail reported on Wolfe's full statement, in which he described the dog as family and said she was "everything I ever dreamed of in a dog."
Wolfe wrote that he and Francie Joe had traveled and explored the country together, and that the dog's "big brown eyes" had touched many people. The dog appeared regularly on American Pickers and on Wolfe's social media.
"She was family. She was everything I ever dreamed of in a dog. And now she's gone, pulled from this world too soon. For days now I've tried to make sense of it all."
He added that he has come to accept he cannot make sense of the loss. All he can do, he wrote, is "remember what she taught me and live my life the way she would be proud of me."
Wolfe's mother loomed large in his story long before her death earlier this year. In a previous exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Wolfe credited Rita with encouraging the collecting habit that eventually became a career and a television franchise.
He recalled that when he was about five years old, his collections had piled up in the front yard. Rather than shut it down, Rita gave him the garage.
"She didn't park her car in the garage anymore. She gave it to me to put all my stuff in there and was encouraging me to bring things home still."
Rita stayed close to the show as it grew. Wolfe said she traveled with the crew during filming and joined him in New York for talk show appearances. "It was very cool for us to share that kind of time together," he told the Daily Mail.
Wolfe and Fritz spent years pitching American Pickers to networks before the History Channel picked it up in 2010. The show is now in its 27th season. Fritz's death in September 2024 ended a partnership that had defined the program from its first episode.
Since Fritz's passing, Wolfe has continued hosting alongside his brother Robert Wolfe and Danielle Colby, both longtime cast members. Rita's death in February and now Francie Joe's add up to three significant losses in roughly a year and a half.
Wolfe did not say whether the accident would affect filming or his schedule. He offered no details about the circumstances. The post was personal, not professional, a man accounting for a loss he believes he could have prevented.
Sometimes the hardest losses to carry are the ones where you can't stop asking yourself what you should have done differently.
