Allegations emerge of Somali immigrant-led fraud in blue state of Maine

Maine is now ground zero for a Medicaid fraud scandal that has conservatives fuming and progressives scrambling for cover.

Accusations of widespread fraud tied to Gateway Community Services, a Portland-based outfit led by Somali-American CEO Abdullahi Ali, have erupted, echoing a massive scandal in Minnesota and raising questions about oversight in Democrat-run states, as the Daily Mail reports.

Let’s start with the whistleblower, Christopher Bernardini, who spent seven years as a billing expert at Gateway until he walked away in April 2025. He’s now alleging the organization bilked Maine’s Medicaid program, known as MaineCare, out of millions.

Gateway's CEO Under Intense Scrutiny

Gateway, under Ali’s leadership, reportedly raked in $28.8 million through MaineCare payments. Reports from The Maine Wire even suggest he bragged about funding a militia back home, which doesn’t exactly scream “trustworthy steward of public funds.”

Ali took to X to push back, declaring, “I make no apologies for building a successful business in Maine, working hard to earn a living, earning my PhD, giving back to my Maine community, and running for office in Jubaland.”

In Minnesota, a jaw-dropping $300 million was allegedly stolen from a federal meals program, with some estimates suggesting the total fraud across schemes could top $1 billion. Over 50 people have been convicted, with dozens more cases pending. Court filings there hint that stolen funds were shipped to Somalia or used to snap up East African properties.

Minnesota's Fraud Casts Long Shadow

Maine’s mess and Republicans are demanding a deep dive into Gateway’s books, especially given the Minnesota precedent. Experts like Matt Bryden, a former UN monitor turned strategist, have flagged potential ties between fraud proceeds and terror groups like al-Shabaab.

The U.S. Treasury Department isn’t sitting idle, launching a probe on Dec. 1 to see if American taxpayer money has been diverted to dangerous hands. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent didn’t mince words, blaming “feckless mismanagement” by prior leadership for letting things spiral.

Community tensions are boiling over in Maine, home to about 2,730 Somalis per the 2023 World Population Review. Recent remarks made by President Donald Trump labeling Somali immigrants as problematic have only fanned the flames.

Local Leaders Clash Over Response

Portland’s District 2 Councilor Wes Pelletier tried to play peacemaker on Instagram, urging folks to “rally behind our Somali community” and decrying racist attacks. But when a voter pushed back, Pelletier’s response -- “lol hey man... shut the f**k up. please.”

Three Somali-American state representatives, all Democrats, have also condemned Trump’s comments, arguing they fuel division. Their voices matter, but so does addressing the fraud allegations head-on, not just the optics.

The stakes couldn’t be higher when “untold millions,” according to City Journal, might be funneled through informal networks to Somalia, potentially making U.S. taxpayers unwilling backers of groups like al-Shabaab. Bryden’s take that al-Shabaab taxes everything, regardless of source, is chilling.

Taxpayers Demand Accountability

For conservatives, this is yet another example of progressive policies prioritizing optics over results. Democrat-led states like Maine and Minnesota seem more focused on signaling virtue than safeguarding public funds. It’s time for real audits, not empty apologies.

The outrage is justified, but solutions must be precise -- target the fraud, not entire communities.

With investigations ramping up, Maine has a chance to set a precedent for accountability. Let’s hope they don’t fumble it under political pressure.
