Al Pacino will receive the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award in February 2027, the actors’ union announced, marking the 62nd honor for the Godfather star’s six-decade career.
News reports said the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA named the 86-year-old American actor the next recipient of its Life Achievement Award, citing both his body of work and his humanitarian efforts.
The union will present the award in Los Angeles on February 28, 2027, at the 33rd Actor Awards. The ceremony is set to stream live on Netflix.
SAG-AFTRA gives the honor each year to an actor who embodies the “finest ideals of the acting profession.” Pacino will be the 62nd person to receive it.
The announcement fits a career built the hard way. Pacino, born Alfredo James Pacino in New York, spent the 1960s hunting for steady work before his film breakthrough in 1972’s “The Godfather.”
That role as Michael Corleone fixed him in American film history. He followed it with Frank Serpico in 1973’s “Serpico” and Tony Montana in 1983’s “Scarface,” parts that still define screen intensity for a generation of viewers and actors.
In 1992 he won the Best Actor Oscar as Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in “Scent of a Woman.” His trophy case also holds multiple Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe awards across a career spanning more than six decades.
Later work kept him visible to new audiences, including a turn as Marvin Schwarz in 2019’s “Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.”
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin framed the choice in plain terms of respect for the craft.
"Like so many actors, I have spent my life in awe and appreciation of the force of nature that is Al Pacino. When you watch him perform, you are witnessing a student and a master,"
Pacino answered the honor with a statement released through the union, pointing back to the work and the people beside him rather than the spotlight.
"I wondered and wandered most of my life but have always felt at home with a script and my fellow actors,"
He added a second note on what the recognition meant to him.
"It’s the work and the actors along the way that have been among the greatest joys of my life. It’s an honor to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA in celebrating the journey,"
SAG-AFTRA said the award recognizes humanitarian work as well as performance. Pacino took part in the “America: A Tribute to Heroes” telethon after the September 11, 2001 attacks. In 2009, the Arthritis Foundation gave him its Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award for charitable efforts.
The union behind the prize is no small shop. SAG-AFTRA represents roughly 160,000 actors, broadcast journalists, dancers, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and other entertainment and media professionals.
For viewers who grew up on Corleone, Serpico, and Montana, the February ceremony will look like a formal receipt for work already etched into the culture. For younger audiences, the Netflix stream will be a short course in what sustained excellence on screen actually looks like.
Hollywood hands out plenty of applause for fashion and noise. An honor tied to craft, endurance, and earned respect still means something.
