Could a rising star in Texas politics be tripped up by a modest $3,000 debt?
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), a vocal progressive representing Dallas, is under the microscope for an unpaid lien of over $3,000 on her luxury condo, even as her campaign splurges on high-end hotels and premium transportation, according to public records and Federal Election Commission filings, as Fox News reports.
County records from Dallas, reviewed by Fox News Digital, reveal that a lien was filed against Crockett’s property on April 11, 2024, for a debt of $3,047.79 owed to the Westside Condominium Association.
The lien notice indicates Crockett defaulted on assessment payments despite demands from the association, leaving the debt unresolved.
As confirmed by the Dallas County Clerk’s Office on a recent Tuesday evening, no record exists of the lien being released, meaning the amount still hangs over her head.
This legal claim prevents Crockett from selling or transferring her condo, located just north of downtown Dallas in the gated Westside Condominiums, a community boasting a pool, clubhouse, and spa-like amenities, per a Homes.com listing.
Crockett purchased the property in May 2014 and remains registered to vote at that address, tying her directly to this unresolved financial obligation.
With HOA fees at Westside ranging from $222 to $403 -- covering maintenance, sewer, and water -- one might wonder why such a manageable sum remains unpaid for a sitting congresswoman.
Fox News Digital sought comment from Crockett’s office on the matter but received no response by the time of publication, leaving questions about her financial priorities unanswered.
While this condo debt lingers, Crockett’s campaign filings paint a starkly different picture, showing nearly $75,000 spent this year on luxury accommodations, transportation, and security across various U.S. cities.
Break it down, and you’ll find over $25,000 on upscale hotels like the Ritz-Carlton, The Luxury Collection, and the West Hollywood Edition, alongside limousine services costing thousands, including $2,728 to a Chicago-based provider.
Add to that nearly $50,000 on security expenses, and it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow at the contrast between campaign extravagance and a modest unpaid lien back home.
Beyond finances, Crockett, who represents Texas’ 30th Congressional District, has stirred controversy with remarks like calling Gov. Greg Abbott a derogatory nickname tied to his disability, a comment many found in poor taste.
As she reportedly weighs a Senate run against Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) with a decision expected on Dec. 8 per the San Antonio Current, some question her readiness for a bigger stage. A longtime Democratic Party strategist didn’t mince words, stating, “The more we learn about Jasmine Crockett, the more clear it is that she’s the worst possible candidate to run for Senate in Texas.”
That critique stings, but it’s worth asking if a small unpaid debt and flashy spending are enough to derail a political career -- or if they simply reflect the kind of misplaced priorities conservatives often point to in progressive leaders. Crockett herself has pushed divisive policies in the past, saying in 2021, while in the Texas House, “The Defund movement seeks to actually bring about healing and finally invest in our communities to make them safer.” Her follow-up, “Defund is about finally being smart on crime,” might sound noble to some, but to many on the right, it’s a reckless approach to public safety that ignores the real-world consequences of underfunding law enforcement.
