Attorney General Pam Bondi is gearing up for a legal showdown, pledging an appeal, after a federal judge tossed out high-profile indictments against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, as the Daily Mail reports.

In a stunning turn of events, a federal judge ruled that interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan overstepped her authority, leading to the dismissal of charges against Comey and James due to procedural missteps and an expired appointment deadline.

Let’s rewind to the beginning. President Donald Trump, frustrated with what he saw as slow progress, nominated Halligan, a former attorney of his, to take the reins as interim U.S. Attorney for Virginia’s Eastern District in September.

Bondi Blindsided by Halligan's Bold Moves

Halligan, a one-time beauty queen and ex-White House aide, didn’t waste time, independently pursuing indictments against Comey for false statements and obstruction, and James for bank fraud, without looping in Bondi or her team.

Bondi, caught off guard by Halligan’s solo act, found herself sidelined as the interim attorney took the cases straight to a grand jury, raising eyebrows about coordination within the Justice Department.

Trump had publicly pushed Bondi to act against his political adversaries. Still, when Halligan stepped in -- replacing Erik Siebert, who was ousted under pressure -- the move seemed to reflect the president’s impatience with the pace of justice.

Currie Cracks Down

Enter Judge Cameron Currie, who dropped a bombshell by accusing Halligan of prosecutorial misconduct and ruling her appointment invalid due to a lapsed 120-day deadline for interim positions, a power that should have rested with federal judges.

The judge didn’t hold back, dismissing the indictments with prejudice. It means the Justice Department can’t refile the same charges, and leaving Bondi scrambling to salvage the cases.

While other courts in places like New Jersey and Nevada have allowed cases to proceed despite disqualifying interim attorneys, Currie’s firm stance sets a tougher precedent, much to the delight of Comey and James.

Bondi Fires Back

Bondi, undeterred, came out swinging at a press conference, promising to fight tooth and nail to hold both Comey and James accountable for what she sees as serious breaches of public trust.

“We'll be taking all available legal action, including an immediate appeal, to hold Letitia James and James Comey accountable for their unlawful conduct,” Bondi declared, signaling this battle is far from over.

Her words carry weight for those of us who believe the rule of law must apply to everyone, though one wonders if the procedural tangle will overshadow the underlying allegations against two of Trump’s longtime critics.

Comey, James Celebrate Court Victory

Letitia James, no stranger to Trump’s ire after securing a civil fraud judgment against his organization -- though a fine exceeding $500 million was later overturned -- welcomed the dismissal with open arms.

“I remain fearless in the face of these baseless charges as I continue fighting for New Yorkers every single day,” James stated, framing the ruling as a vindication against what she sees as political persecution.

Her defiance mirrors Comey’s own history with Trump, from his 2017 firing as FBI director amid a Russia probe to years of public spats. Yet, the judge’s ruling offers both a rare moment of reprieve in a saga that’s anything but over.
