Elon Musk sparks controversy with bold query at Trump dinner for Saudi crown prince

Elon Musk just tossed a verbal grenade at a White House banquet that has everyone talking.

On Tuesday, Musk attended a grand event hosted by President Donald Trump to honor Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where Musk reportedly questioned Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla about the Crown Prince’s reputation in a way that raised eyebrows, while the evening unfolded against a backdrop of strained U.S.-Saudi relations and lingering questions about past controversies, as the Daily Mail reports.

This banquet marked the crown prince’s first White House visit in seven years, a significant moment given the tensions following the 2018 assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Musk's Provocative Remark Shocks Attendees

According to lipreader Nicola Hickling, who analyzed footage for the Daily Mail, Musk turned to Bourla and asked, “What is your opinion, is he a terrorist?”

Let’s be real -- that’s not exactly small talk over caviar, and Bourla’s stunned reaction, as noted by Hickling, suggests Musk’s bluntness hit like a freight train.

Representatives for both Musk and Bourla have been reached for comment, but so far, it’s crickets -- leaving us to wonder if this was a calculated jab or just Musk being Musk.

Trump's Lavish Welcome Raises Questions

President Trump rolled out the red carpet for the crown prince with an Air Force flyover featuring F-15s and F-35s, a parade of horses, and even a pat on the back that some saw as a breach of royal protocol.

First lady Melania Trump complemented the spectacle in a striking green $3,350 Elie Saab gown, a subtle nod to Saudi colors, while high-profile guests like Cristiano Ronaldo, Donald Trump Jr., and business titans such as Apple’s Tim Cook and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang filled the room.

This display of warmth comes despite the shadow of Khashoggi’s brutal 2018 murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where the Washington Post columnist was ambushed by 15 agents, suffocated, and dismembered. His remains never found.

Khashoggi's Shadow Looms Large

U.S. intelligence has suggested that the crown prince likely directed the operation, though he has consistently denied any involvement in the killing.

During a press interaction in the Oval Office that day, ABC News reporter Mary Bruce directly challenged the crown prince, asking, “You orchestrated the brutal murder of a journalist. 9/11 families are furious that you're here in the Oval Office. Why should Americans trust you?”

Trump quickly dismissed Bruce as “fake news,” criticized her tone, and called her a “terrible reporter,” even threatening to pull ABC’s license when she pressed further on unrelated matters -- classic Trump, deflecting with a sledgehammer when the heat turns up.

Trump's Defense and Saudi Ties

The president didn’t shy away from defending his guest, telling reporters that Khashoggi was a polarizing figure and implying the crown prince did not know about the incident. It's a stance that’s sure to frustrate critics who see it as too cozy for comfort.

Trump’s close relationship with the Saudi royal family, including substantial business interests like a planned skyscraper project in Jeddah, adds another layer of complexity to this diplomatic dance. It's hardly a secret, but a reminder that politics and profit often share the same table.

While past administrations, like President Joe Biden’s in 2022, opted for cautious gestures like a fist bump to avoid seeming overly friendly with the crown prince, Trump’s full-throated hospitality signals a return to unapologetic alliance-building. Whether that’s pragmatic or problematic depends on where you stand on the moral compass of international relations.
