Olivia Nuzzi, a prominent political journalist, is stirring the pot with a forthcoming book that challenges the bizarre tale of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. having a brain worm.

In her soon-to-be-released work, titled American Canto, set for shelves on Dec. 2, Nuzzi dives into a personal scandal involving an alleged digital relationship with Kennedy, while casting serious doubt on his infamous medical oddity, as highlighted in a recent excerpt published by Vanity Fair, as the Daily Mail reports.

Let’s rewind to May 2024, when the New York Times first reported Kennedy’s testimony from his 2012 divorce proceedings, claiming a doctor suspected a dead parasite in his brain. It's a story that exploded into a cultural meme, even landing a mention on Saturday Night Live.

Unraveling the Brain Worm Mystery

This so-called brain worm became a symbol of Kennedy’s shift from a respected environmental advocate to a figure associated with controversial anti-vaccine views, reshaping his public persona in ways that raised eyebrows across the political spectrum.

Fast forward to last week, before the Vanity Fair excerpt dropped, when the New York Times revealed initial details of Nuzzi’s non-physical entanglement with Kennedy, including sweet nothings like him calling her “Livvy” and penning poetry with dreams of a shared future.

Now, Nuzzi, who serves as Vanity Fair West Coast editor, refers to Kennedy in her book as the “Politician,” a thinly veiled reference that leaves little to the imagination about who she’s discussing.

Scandal Rocks Careers and Relationships

The storm broke in September 2024, when Nuzzi, then New York Magazine’s first Washington correspondent, was placed on leave over this inappropriate connection, a blow to a career built on sharp political reporting.

Complicating matters, Nuzzi was engaged to political reporter Ryan Lizza during this period, while Kennedy had been married to actress Cheryl Hines for a decade, making the personal fallout as messy as a D.C. swamp.

After the relationship news erupted, Nuzzi retreated to Malibu, California, for a self-imposed exile, where she reflected on wildfires and personal infernos alike, as detailed in her book’s raw passages.

Kennedy’s Rise Amid Controversy

The scandal unfolded after Kennedy exited the presidential race and threw his support behind President Donald Trump, only to later be tapped for a Cabinet role as Health and Human Services Secretary just a week after the election period.

In her writing, Nuzzi offers a glimpse into her conflicted feelings, stating, “I loved his brain. I hated the idea of an intruder therein,” a line that reveals both admiration and concern for the man behind the headlines.

She goes on to quote the Politician reassuring her with, “Baby don’t worry. It’s not a worm,” suggesting a trusted doctor reviewed brain scans and dismissed the parasite theory, a twist that undermines a narrative many took as gospel.

A Conservative Lens on Personal Failings

From a conservative vantage point, this saga reeks of the kind of personal drama that distracts from real policy debates, though one can’t help but sympathize with the human cost of public scrutiny on both Nuzzi and Kennedy.

Yet, let’s not pretend the progressive agenda doesn’t often revel in such sensationalism -- turning a quirky health rumor into a weapon against Kennedy’s credibility, while ignoring the broader context of his evolving political stance.

Ultimately, as Nuzzi’s book prepares to hit shelves.  It’s a reminder that behind every headline, there are messy, human stories -- ones that deserve a fair hearing, even if they challenge the cultural narratives we’ve been fed about figures like Kennedy.
