Letitia James's grandniece charged with making threats against VA school official

In a startling display of disregard for decorum, Nakia Thompson, the grandniece of New York Attorney General Letitia James, finds herself in hot water over allegations of threatening a school official in Norfolk, Virginia, as the New York Post reports.

On Oct. 9, Thompson, 36, allegedly unleashed a barrage of profanity and threats against Lindenwood Elementary School assistant principal Marie Hall, leading to a misdemeanor charge for using threatening language over public airways, compounded by her ties to a federal mortgage fraud case involving James’ property.

The drama kicked off around 1:15 p.m. on that fateful day when Hall and the school principal called Thompson to discuss an issue with one of her children. What should have been a routine conversation turned ugly fast, as Thompson allegedly let loose with language that would make a sailor blush. Reports indicate she didn’t stop at words, threatening physical violence over the phone.

From phone call to face-to-face fury

Not content with a long-distance tirade, Thompson reportedly showed up at the school just 20 minutes later, ready to escalate the confrontation. She met with Hall and two other staff members in the office, where her verbal barrage continued unabated. The meeting was cut short, understandably.

As she stormed out, Thompson wasn’t done yet, allegedly making further threats in the hallway while on speakerphone, with parents and students as unwilling witnesses. It’s hard to fathom how someone could think this behavior is acceptable, especially in an environment meant to nurture young minds.

Hall, clearly shaken, sought and was granted a protective order against Thompson on the same day the misdemeanor charge was filed. The charge, based on Virginia law, targets the use of obscene or threatening language over communication devices with the intent to intimidate or harass.

Threats echoing in school hallways

In the criminal complaint, Hall recounted Thompson’s chilling words during the phone call: “Bitch, I’m going to punch you in the f–king face.” That’s not just a heated exchange; it’s a direct threat that crosses every line of civilized discourse. When did schools become battlegrounds for personal vendettas?

Hall further detailed the hostility as Thompson left the school, noting in the complaint, “As Ms. Thompson is leaving down the hallway talking with another person on speaker, she said something to the effect of, ‘I’ma punch this bitch in the face.’” Such brazen disregard for authority, especially in front of impressionable children, paints a troubling picture.

Even when ordered to leave the premises, Thompson reportedly refused, forcing Hall to call law enforcement for assistance. This isn’t just a lapse in judgment; it’s a deliberate choice to defy rules and respect. One can’t help but question if this sense of entitlement stems from connections in high places.

Legal troubles beyond the schoolyard

Thompson’s troubles don’t end at the school gates; she’s also listed as an “absconder” in Forsyth County, North Carolina, for failing to complete probation on prior misdemeanor convictions for assault and trespassing. This pattern of behavior suggests a deeper issue that can’t be ignored. She’s set to face the court on Nov. 3, for the current charge, and one hopes justice will be served without favoritism.

Adding another layer of complexity, Thompson resides in a Norfolk home purchased by Letitia James in 2020, a property now under scrutiny by the Department of Justice for alleged mortgage fraud. Federal prosecutors claim James misrepresented herself as the sole occupant to secure a favorable $109,600 loan, saving nearly $20,000. James has pleaded not guilty to charges of bank fraud and making false statements.

Neighbors have noted to media outlets that they’ve never seen James at the residence, raising questions about its true purpose. State ethics filings show the property was listed as a rental generating income until May, when it was reclassified as an asset with no earnings. It’s a tangled web that doesn’t exactly scream transparency.

Political connections, public perceptions

Letitia James, of course, is no stranger to high-profile legal battles, having gone after the Trump Organization for allegedly inflating real estate values, securing a civil judgment against former President Donald Trump. Though an initial fine exceeding $500 million was overturned on appeal, the court upheld findings that Trump exaggerated his net worth. It’s ironic, that someone so focused on holding others accountable might have family and property dealings casting their own shadows?

This story isn’t just about a heated school confrontation; it’s a window into the messy overlap of personal conduct, legal entanglements, and political power.

While everyone deserves the presumption of innocence, the optics here are tough to ignore, especially for those of us who value integrity over influence. Let’s hope the courts handle both Thompson’s and James’ cases with the fairness they demand, not the favoritism they might expect.
