Virginia judge issues protective order after Democrat staffer’s threat to GOP delegate

Political tensions in Virginia just got a whole lot uglier as a Democrat campaign staffer allegedly threatened physical violence against a Republican lawmaker.

A startling incident at a registrar’s office in Hampton has led to a magistrate granting a protective order for Delegate A.C. Cordoza, a Republican representing Poquoson and parts of Hampton, following a heated confrontation with a staffer for his opponent, Democrat Virgil Thornton Sr, as Fox News reports.

The clash unfolded when Cordoza was engaging with a voter at the registrar’s office, only to be met with hostility from the staffer, who reportedly warned him to “back off” and escalated to a chilling threat.

Escalating threats in charged climate

“I’ll put a knot on your head,” the staffer, identified as Ms. Sanders, allegedly told Cordoza, according to court records. If that’s not a wake-up call about the state of political discourse, what is?

Cordoza didn’t brush off the warning, especially given the toxic climate surrounding campaigns lately. He promptly sought legal protection, and Magistrate Judge Gregory Kaliris agreed, signing the order on Tuesday after Hampton police investigated but filed no charges.

Thornton, Cordoza’s challenger, has a different story, claiming the delegate was the instigator by allegedly using his physical presence to intimidate Thornton’s niece, the staffer in question. That narrative might raise eyebrows, considering only Cordoza walked away with a protective order.

Political hostility on the rise

Local police responded to the scene, looked into the matter, but ultimately left it unresolved with no arrests. An officer did, however, advise Cordoza to pursue the protective order, a step that underscores the seriousness of the encounter.

Thornton’s campaign has stayed silent despite multiple outreach attempts by media, though whispers from his camp to local outlets paint Cordoza as the aggressor. Without a response, it’s hard to give much weight to claims that contradict the judicial outcome.

This incident isn’t an isolated flare-up; it’s part of a disturbing pattern of hostility toward Virginia lawmakers. Cordoza himself pointed out he’s the third General Assembly member threatened during this political cycle alone.

Broader threats to lawmakers exposed

Delegate Kim Taylor of Petersburg faced a texted death threat, resulting in an arrest in Dinwiddie County. Meanwhile, Delegate Geary Higgins of Lovettsville was warned he’d be shot at his next rally for supporting a Republican gubernatorial nominee.

Even former Norfolk lawmaker Jay Jones has been tied to a scandal involving texts fantasizing about violence against a GOP leader, with Cordoza criticizing Democrats for not demanding Jones withdraw from a key race. The silence from House Speaker Don Scott Jr. on Cordoza’s situation only adds fuel to the perception of partisan double standards.

“I was engaging with voters at the poll; talking about my record … and one of my opponent’s campaign workers got upset and decided it was a great idea to threaten me,” Cordoza told Fox News Digital. In a climate where political violence is increasingly normalized by some on the progressive left, his caution is hardly misplaced.

Campaign smears and policy responses

Adding to the tension, Thornton’s campaign previously ran attack ads against Cordoza that were riddled with distortions, as fact-checked by WAVY’s truth tracker. One ad falsely suggested Cordoza threatened a plainclothes officer with a firearm, when in reality, he merely gestured to his holster in self-defense after a confrontational encounter.

Another smear claimed Cordoza chased a young woman years ago, but police found no wrongdoing on his part, and the accuser’s story shifted repeatedly. These kinds of baseless attacks only deepen the mistrust in an already polarized environment.

Cordoza, who often collaborates with Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, continues to push for solutions like the Virginia Safety and Service Act to shield public figures from such threats. His track record, including authoring the successful CODI Alert system for missing children, shows a commitment to public safety that contrasts sharply with the mudslinging and intimidation tactics he’s now facing.
