Newly uncovered documents show that former Special Counsel Jack Smith allegedly kept tabs on the private phone calls of nearly a dozen Republican lawmakers while digging into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol unrest, as Fox News reports.

This bombshell, brought to light by Fox News Digital, centers on a surveillance operation targeting GOP senators and a representative as part of an investigation into the events surrounding the certification of the 2020 election.

Let’s rewind to April 13, 2022, when the FBI opened a case dubbed "Arctic Frost," classified as a sensitive and even "prohibited" matter concerning election law issues.

Uncovering Arctic Frost

By November 2022, Smith was appointed special counsel to spearhead this probe, which later involved subpoenaing major telephone providers in 2023 to collect detailed call records.

These records, analyzed by an FBI special agent on Smith’s team, revealed not just who the lawmakers called, but also the originating and receiving locations of those calls -- talk about a deep dive into personal privacy.

The targeted lawmakers include prominent GOP figures such as Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, and Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania.

GOP lawmakers under surveillance

A document titled "CAST Assistance," dated Sept. 27, 2023, and reviewed by Fox News Digital, outlines the use of the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team to conduct preliminary toll analysis on these records.

While the calls likely tied into discussions about the 2020 election certification, the idea of federal agents mapping out private conversations of elected officials raises serious questions about overreach -- where’s the line between investigation and intrusion?

Fast forward to the recent discovery of this document by FBI Director Kash Patel, prompted by an oversight request from Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, which has now sparked a broader review of the "Arctic Frost" case.

FBI leadership responds

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino didn’t mince words, stating, "It is a disgrace that I have to stand on Capitol Hill and reveal this -- that the FBI was once weaponized to track the private communications of U.S. lawmakers for political purposes."

Bongino’s frustration is palpable, and rightly so -- when law enforcement tools are turned on those elected to serve, it erodes trust faster than a progressive agenda on overdrive, leaving many to wonder if this was justice or just a political fishing expedition.

Bongino, alongside Patel, is briefing the affected lawmakers on Capitol Hill to address this unsettling find, promising transparency in a system that’s often as clear as mud.

Promises of accountability, reform emerge

Patel himself doubled down on the need for answers, declaring, "The American people deserve the truth, and under my leadership, they will have it."

That’s a bold pledge, and one hopes it’s more than just words -- because with Smith’s investigation costing taxpayers over $50 million before being dismissed in court after charging President Donald Trump, the public has every right to demand accountability over what smells like a politically charged witch hunt.

As this review continues under Patel and Bongino’s watch, the fallout from Smith’s surveillance tactics -- despite Fox News Digital’s inability to reach him for comment -- reminds us that the balance between national security and personal freedom is a tightrope we can’t afford to slip on.
