Charlie Kirk’s assassination shocked the nation. The Turning Point USA founder was gunned down during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Breitbart News labeled it a political assassination, igniting fierce debate.

Kirk was fatally shot while addressing students, a brazen act that sent ripples through conservative circles. Far-left "Squad" member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has since sparked outrage with her response, blasting conservatives for linking the attack to left-wing rhetoric, as Breitbart reports. Her comments, aired in a Thursday interview with former MSNBC anchor Mehdi Hasan, poured fuel on an already polarized fire.

The alleged assassin, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was taken into custody on Friday. While the nation mourned, some leftists reportedly celebrated Kirk’s death, a detail Omar conveniently sidestepped. Instead, she trained her ire on conservative leaders, accusing them of lacking compassion.

Omar’s controversial critique

“Conservatives calling political violence a left-wing problem were ‘disgusting’ and ‘full of shit,’” Omar declared. Her choice of words, crude and unapologetic, reflects the left’s refusal to introspect on their own inflammatory rhetoric. One wonders if she’d apply the same standard to her allies’ vitriol.

Omar didn’t stop there, targeting President Donald Trump’s response to the tragedy. “He doesn’t even know who the assassin is,” she said, criticizing Trump’s claim that a “left-wing lunatic” was responsible. Her indignation feels hollow when her own party’s rhetoric often vilifies conservatives as existential threats.

Trump, undeterred, announced that Kirk would receive a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom. The honor recognizes Kirk’s commitment to civil dialogue, a legacy Omar seems eager to rewrite. Her selective outrage ignores Kirk’s role as a provocateur for free speech.

Distorting Kirk’s legacy

Omar painted Kirk as a callous figure, claiming he downplayed George Floyd’s death and opposed Juneteenth. “Charlie was someone who once said ‘guns save lives’ after a school shooting,” she sneered. This cherry-picking distorts Kirk’s broader fight against progressive overreach.

She continued, accusing Kirk of dismissing empathy as a “newly created word.” Yet Omar’s own empathy seems selective, reserved for Kirk’s family but not his supporters. Her rhetoric mirrors the divisiveness she claims to condemn.

“There is nothing more effed up than to pretend his words and actions have not been recorded,” Omar said, targeting conservatives like Rep. Nancy Mace. Her attack conveniently ignores the left’s own history of incendiary language. Pot, meet kettle.

Selective compassion, selective outrage

Omar’s claim that conservatives lack compassion rings hollow. “I have empathy for his kids and his wife,” she said, but her words drip with disdain for Kirk’s ideals. True compassion doesn’t come with a side of character assassination.

She further criticized Trump’s address as insufficiently “compassion-filled” and overly partisan. Yet her own remarks, laced with profanity and accusations, hardly model the unity she demands. The hypocrisy is glaring.

Kirk’s death has exposed the left’s double standards. While Omar decries conservative rhetoric, she ignores the glee some leftists expressed over the assassination. Her silence on their behavior speaks louder than her words.

A nation mourns, Omar divides

Across the globe, people grieve Kirk’s loss, a testament to his impact. Trump’s decision to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom underscores Kirk’s role in fostering debate. Omar’s response, by contrast, seeks to vilify rather than unite.

The assassination at Utah Valley University was a tragedy, not a soapbox. Omar’s attempt to score political points off Kirk’s death reveals a deeper sickness in our discourse. Her words do more to inflame than to heal.

As conservatives honor Kirk’s legacy, Omar’s outburst serves as a reminder: the left’s moral posturing often masks their own divisiveness. Her attacks on Kirk and his supporters betray a refusal to engage with ideas she dislikes. In death, as in life, Kirk exposes the progressive agenda’s contradictions.
