Fake wholesalers led to Neal's Yard Dairy losing 950 wheels of artisanal cheddar valued at approximately $388,000, the New York Post reported.
The scam initially unfolded when deceitful individuals boldly posed as representatives of a major French retailer and approached Neal's Yard Dairy. Believing in the legitimacy of the transaction, the Dairy agreed to send them 950 wheels of clothbound cheddar, weighing over 48,000 pounds in total.
However, soon after the delivery, the Dairy discovered that the order was fraudulent. The scammers had vanished, taking with them premium cheese varieties such as Hafod, Westcombe, and Pitchfork Cheddar, leaving the Dairy with a significant void both in inventory and finances.
