Former Clinton official and Biden staffer Metzl: back the DSA if you like France’s chaos

A former Clinton and Biden aide warned Democrats that DSA candidates are pushing the same far-left future he says has taken hold in France’s unrest.

Jamie Metzl, an Atlantic Council senior fellow and longtime Democratic foreign-policy hand, used a Monday appearance on Fox News Channel’s “Ingraham Angle” to draw a hard line between mainstream Democrats and the Democratic Socialists of America.

Metzl, who once advised the World Health Organization, served on the National Security Council in the Clinton years, and worked as deputy staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee under then-Sen. Joe Biden, said the left wing of his own party is chasing the same outcome he sees overseas.

Breitbart News carried his remarks from the broadcast, including a blunt pitch aimed at voters weighing DSA-aligned candidates.

"If you like what you’re seeing in France, then you should support these DSA candidates who are, essentially, calling for the same thing here."

That line was not a throwaway. Metzl framed the French turmoil as a warning, not a model.

Metzl says France’s protests were hijacked

On air, he rejected the idea that the unrest still belongs to student demonstrators.

He said the episode may have begun that way, then changed hands.

"Well, it may have started, in some ways, as a student protest. But that was long ago, and this thing has been hijacked by far-left extremists,... Marxists, violent Islamists, that’s why you see so many Palestinian flags."

In Metzl’s telling, the symbols on the street mark who now runs the show. He tied that picture directly to the American left’s socialist wing.

A Democrat tells his party to confront the DSA

Metzl did not cast himself as a Republican critic. He said he remains a Democrat and still backs mainstream figures in the party.

His demand was internal: push back hard on the far left, starting with the DSA.

"I’m a Democrat, and the far left in our country, the DSA, is really wanting to have this same future. So, while I do support mainstream Democrats, I believe the Democratic Party needs to go aggressively against our far left. Because if you like what you’re seeing in France, then you should support these DSA candidates who are, essentially, calling for the same thing here."

He offered no soft landing. Support the DSA slate, he argued, and you are choosing the future he described in France.

The clip did not name specific DSA candidates, city races, or platform planks. It also gave no calendar date beyond “Monday’s broadcast,” and it offered no independent tally of events on the ground in France. What it did supply was a clear charge from a credentialed Democrat: the party’s socialist flank wants the same destination he says French unrest already reached.

For voters who keep hearing that “far left” is a slur instead of a faction, Metzl’s résumé makes the scolding harder to dismiss. A Clinton NSC veteran and former Biden Senate staffer is not speaking from a conservative talk-radio booth. He is telling his own side that indulging the DSA is a choice with a visible overseas preview.

Parties that refuse to police their extremes eventually own them, and Metzl just told Democrats which extreme he thinks they are being asked to own.
