Obama brands Justice Department probe of fellow Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar 'appalling'

Former President Barack Obama branded a Justice Department probe of fellow Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar "appalling," casting a raid on her home as payback for criticizing President Trump.

Six days after federal agents searched the Minnesota congresswoman’s Washington, D.C., residence, Obama took to social media to denounce the investigation and defend her as a “law-abiding elected official.”

Just the News reported that Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the Monday raid as part of a larger criminal inquiry into Omar’s family history. The search focused on possible fraud and false statements in family members’ immigration paperwork.

The federal probe centers on whether Omar’s father lied about her age when she obtained U.S. citizenship in 2000. That is the core allegation under review, not a vague political grudge.

Obama framed it differently. He said the government was hunting for a “nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.”

Obama casts scrutiny of immigration records as political revenge

In his Sunday post, the former president tied the Justice Department action directly to Omar’s criticism of President Trump.

Obama wrote:

"The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,"

He offered no public evidence that the age question, the citizenship file, or the immigration paperwork were fabricated. He simply declared the smoking gun “nonexistent.”

The raid itself was real. Homeland Security Investigations agents entered Omar’s D.C. home. The inquiry is described as criminal and tied to family immigration documents. Charges, seizures, and any official Justice Department statement were not detailed in the initial reporting.

Citizenship paperwork from 2000 sits at the center of the case

Omar, a Somali-born Democrat who represents Minnesota, has said she fled Somalia in 1995 and became a lawfully naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. That account, relayed through CNN and cited in the Just the News report, is the timeline now under federal review.

The question is narrow and factual: Did her father misstate her age on the documents that led to that citizenship? Age, identity, and lawful entry are not side issues in immigration law. They are the foundation of the file.

Obama’s response skipped that substance. He treated a records probe as proof that the government was punishing a critic. He called the entire effort “appalling.”

Elected officials are not exempt from questions about how they, or their relatives, obtained legal status. A congresswoman’s home is not a shield against review of decades-old immigration claims when agents have a criminal predicate.

Political loyalty outruns the paperwork questions

Obama’s post cast Omar as the victim and the Justice Department as the aggressor. He did not address whether false statements on citizenship applications matter. He did not explain why a search for immigration fraud evidence should be off-limits once the subject holds office and criticizes a president.

The sequence is straightforward. Agents raided the D.C. residence on Monday. Obama answered on Sunday. His message was that criticism of Trump, not the integrity of a 2000 naturalization file, explained the government’s move.

That claim puts party loyalty and media narrative ahead of basic accountability. If family immigration paperwork contains false statements, the public interest does not vanish because the lawmaker is a Democrat or a frequent critic of the White House.

Voters were told for years that immigration rules, honest filings, and equal enforcement matter. Those standards do not pause for allies of former presidents.

When a raid targets possible fraud in citizenship documents, the serious response is to examine the file, not to declare the gun “nonexistent” and move on.
