Suspected food poisoning sickens 40 guests at Costa del Sol wedding

Around 40 wedding guests fell ill with diarrhea and vomiting after a Saturday reception at a four-star hotel on Spain’s Costa del Sol, prompting a health investigation.

Celebrations at the Hotel Estival Torrequebrada in Benalmadena, west of Malaga, began around 2 p.m. with a drinks reception and a full meal. By that evening and into the next morning, roughly half of the roughly 80 people on hand were sick.

The Sun reported that guests suffered diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, muscle fatigue, and fevers. Some needed ambulances for hospital checks. None were admitted.

Spain’s Regional Delegation of Health and Consumer Affairs opened an inquiry into what it called a suspected foodborne infection outbreak. Inspectors are collecting samples of the wedding food for testing. No pathogen or single dish has been confirmed.

Menu served, then the overnight wave of illness

The reception menu, as described by guests, included cured ham and salmorejo, a cold tomato puree common in Spanish cooking, followed by prawn risotto, meat with hollandaise sauce, and mille-feuille for dessert.

Symptoms hit in stages. Some guests grew ill Saturday evening, including one at 2 a.m. Others woke up sick the next morning. Guests told local outlet TodoAlicante they had no idea what triggered it.

One guest described how hard it became simply to leave.

"If a couple were affected, whichever felt slightly better drove, but there were couples where neither was well enough to drive and they had to call an ambulance to get to hospital."

That account captures the scale inside a single wedding party: pairs of adults too weak to drive themselves for basic medical checks.

Hotel stays quiet while samples go to the lab

A spokesperson for Hotel Estival Torrequebrada declined to add detail while the probe continues.

"As the relevant investigations and analyses are still ongoing, we are not in a position to provide any additional comments beyond the information contained in that communication."

The same spokesperson added a standard pledge of later updates.

"We appreciate your understanding and will provide further updates should additional verified information become available."

In plain terms, the four-star property is waiting on lab work and is not naming a cause, a supplier, or a kitchen failure. Officials have not announced closures or penalties. Arrests are not part of the public record on this incident.

Separate Costa hotel scare still hangs in the background

The Sun also noted a different outbreak last year at the Izan Cavanna Hotel in La Manga, near Murcia. More than 100 tourists fell ill there, including a 15-month-old baby and dozens of children. Forty-seven people went to the hospital. Early tests pointed toward salmonella. That case is separate from the Benalmadena wedding. It does show how fast a Spanish resort kitchen problem can swamp guests and local clinics.

For the Torrequebrada wedding, the core facts remain limited and recent. About 40 people sick. A shared meal. An active sampling effort. No confirmed bug. No named bride or groom in the coverage. No final lab result released to the public.

Travelers still pack the Costa del Sol for sun and big celebrations. They also depend on basic food safety they cannot inspect themselves. When half a wedding list ends up sick overnight, the lab work and the hotel’s full accounting are not optional extras. They are the minimum.
