Leslie Bogart, daughter of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, was spotted in Los Angeles this week after years of staying far from the fame her parents built.
The 74-year-old kept her head down as she headed to an appointment in the city, silver-haired and moving without an entourage. Daily Mail published exclusive photos of the outing and noted how rarely she is seen at all.
Leslie is the only daughter of two screen legends. She is also one of the last major links to a Hollywood that prized craft over constant exposure. After her mother’s death in 2014, public sightings of her dried up. This week’s appearance broke a long stretch of quiet.
She has spent most of her adult life offstage. That choice stands in plain contrast to the world her parents once dominated.
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall met in 1944 on the set of To Have and Have Not. He was already a star. She was young, sharp, and instantly paired with him on screen and off. They had a 25-year age gap and became one of the defining couples of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
They threw all-night parties, mixed with Frank Sinatra, and helped form the Holmby Hills Rat Pack set. In 1954 they even let CBS cameras into their home for an Edward R. Murrow tour. After the tour, Bacall brought their children, Stephen and Leslie, into the frame.
Leslie was named after actor Leslie Howard, a close friend of her father’s. She was five when Bogart died of cancer in 1957. Stephen was eight. The fame did not fade with the funeral.
Stephen Bogart spoke about that pressure years later. In 1995 he told the New York Times the hard part was not his father’s life. It was what followed.
"It was his death, rather than his life, that was the problem for me,"
he said. He added:
"When he died, it brought the attention on us. I hated it. I didn’t want my picture taken anymore."
Leslie took a similar path without the interviews. Childhood travel on film sets gave way to fewer public appearances as she grew up. She was photographed leaving Chasen’s Restaurant in Los Angeles with her mother in 1983. She attended the Academy Awards in 1997 and joined her mother and brother that same year when a commemorative postage stamp honored their father. One of her last known turns with the family came in 2009 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards Gala, alongside Bacall, Stephen, and half-brother Sam Robards.
Then the trail went cold.
In 1990 Leslie married yoga instructor Erich Schiffmann. They have been together for more than three decades. They have no children. While Stephen married three times and has three kids, Leslie built a normal life away from premieres and press lines.
Bacall later married actor Jason Robards in 1961. They divorced eight years later. Sam Robards is Leslie and Stephen’s half-brother from that marriage.
When Bacall died in 2014, most of her $26.6 million estate went to her three children. She also left a clear personal request. She asked them to
"respect my wish to keep private certain personal letters, writings, diaries and other papers or memorabilia."
The daughter who just resurfaced in Los Angeles has lived as if she took that wish seriously long before it was written down.
After 2014, Leslie’s public footprint shrank further. No steady red-carpet run. No memoir circuit. No branded return to her parents’ myth. The woman spotted this week in Los Angeles was simply going to an appointment. The photos show someone who never signed up for the modern fame machine.
Old Hollywood made icons of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Their daughter shows another way to carry a famous name: protect a private life, keep the cameras at a distance, and let the work of the past stand on its own.
In an age that treats attention as oxygen, that still reads like discipline.
