Nine people died in an Erie, Pennsylvania, home shooting Friday, including a woman four days from giving birth and two children, as neighbors call the violence unimaginable.
Investigators returned Saturday to the house at 722 Perry Street, still working to piece together what happened inside. KDKA-TV reported the community is grappling with the loss of nine lives after the deadly attack.
Among those killed were Angelina Stone, her unborn baby, two children, brothers, and a friend. Stone was four days away from giving birth.
Neighbors who live near the Perry Street home said the night only grew worse as the hours passed.
Tiffany Jackson told KDKA-TV what she saw unfold.
"It just got worse and worse throughout the night as the day went on; it was unimaginable,"
Jennifer Macko, another neighbor, put the scene in plain terms.
"This situation is horrific and unimaginable,"
Lisa Simmers, a friend of the family, said two of the young victims were on the autism spectrum and could not have protected themselves.
"Her two babies were on the spectrum. Innocent children, couldn't have told on that man if they wanted to, and he still killed them,"
Simmers described the attack as reaching beyond the mother and children to people who tried to help.
"A crime like that, what do you say? A person kills two innocent children, a pregnant woman and the people coming to try to help her."
She also spoke of standing outside while the violence continued inside the house, unable to stop it.
"It's mind-blowing to me to understand what was happening in that house while we were standing outside. The feeling of helplessness and knowing we couldn't do anything and she was right there," Simmers said.
Juicesiyah Alexzander Windham, the father of one of the victims, told KDKA-TV the loss shattered him.
"I'm so broken, man,"
Windham said he had left Erie to get away from a dangerous way of life, only to come back and lose the people he was fighting to stay alive for.
"I left Erie to stay away from that lifestyle, and I come back and lose my daughter, lose my baby mom, lose who I was fighting to stay alive for," he said.
No suspect name, arrest, charge, or motive was reported in the initial accounts. Investigators remained at the home Saturday as they continued to sort out the sequence of the attack.
A pregnant mother, young children, and people who tried to help them are gone. Lawful communities deserve answers, and the people who commit this kind of slaughter deserve to face the full weight of the law.
