Five people were found fatally shot at a southern Georgia home late Friday in what Douglas police described as an apparent murder-suicide, with no remaining threat to the community.

Douglas Police Department officers answered an active-shooter call around 11:09 p.m. Friday at a residence on Robin Lane in the Touchton Woods neighborhood. They found five people with apparent gunshot wounds.

Four were pronounced dead at the scene. A fifth person was taken to a hospital and later pronounced deceased. At a Saturday afternoon press conference, Police Chief Brannen Pruette said the deaths were the result of an apparent murder-suicide and that the public faced no further threat.

Newsweek reported the chief’s account along with remarks from Mayor Tony Paulk after the discovery in Douglas, a Coffee County city of about 11,864 people in southern Georgia, roughly 115 miles northwest of Jacksonville, Florida.

Pruette withholds names while bodies go to state investigators

Pruette said officials would not publicly identify the victims or their family at this time. Identities are expected only after next-of-kin notification is finished.

The bodies were sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for autopsies. Pruette urged anyone with information to contact investigators. No arrests or charges in the Douglas case were announced in the available official remarks.

Weapon details, the exact sequence inside the home, and the evidence behind the murder-suicide label were not released. Victim ages and relationships also remained undisclosed.

Paulk ties the timing to Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Mayor Tony Paulk spoke during the same press conference and offered condolences to the families. He noted that the incident fell in October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Paulk said:

"First and foremost, I extend our deepest condolences to the families affected. No words can adequately express the sorrow surrounding such a tragedy,"

He continued:

"Please know that the city of Douglas stands ready, and we ask our community to surround you with compassion, prayer, and respect during this difficult time, Douglas is more than a city. We are neighbors, friends, and a community that stands together, especially in times of tragedy."

Newsweek said it emailed the Douglas Police Department and the Coffee County Sheriff’s office Saturday for more information.

Recent shootings also marked the same stretch of reporting

The same account placed the Douglas deaths alongside other recent violence. In Vienna, Georgia, about 80 miles northwest of Douglas, a homecoming celebration shooting the prior weekend left two people dead and 35 injured after gunfire began about 1:25 a.m. at a neighborhood party spanning four blocks.

On September 27, a birthday-party shooting at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon injured 12 teenagers. Five suspects were charged, including a 15-year-old charged as an adult, according to coverage cited from FOX 5 Atlanta. Macon sits about 115 miles north of Douglas.

Separately, a Friday night mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, left nine people dead, including two children. Under the Gun Violence Archive definition cited in the reporting, a mass shooting is an incident in which at least four people are shot, injured, or killed, excluding the shooter.

Five dead in one Douglas home is a hard fact. Families and taxpayers deserve full answers, swift autopsies, and honest accounting, not a fade-out once the cameras leave.
