Johnny Depp’s new “Ebenezer” trailer has fans cheering his studio return while others question a marketing line that sells a fresh take on a story they say they already know.

The trailer, released Thursday, shows Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge and marks his first major Hollywood studio film in years, Fox News reported.

Online reaction on X landed in two camps. Some viewers welcomed the comeback. Others zeroed in on the campaign’s tagline, “Think you know his story? Think again”, and said the footage looked faithful to Charles Dickens, not revisionist.

One user wrote that the trailer confirmed it was “still the same story,” comparing it to classic Scrooge tellings and the Muppets version and telling others not to worry about having to “think again.”

Another asked why the tagline promised a rethink “when every single thing in the trailers is faithful to Dickens,” adding that the tale is already known and questioning why the film was being sold as a revision.

Supporters say Depp is back on top

Not every post was a critique of the marketing. Several users treated the clip as proof Depp had returned to form.

“This looks so awesome, im glad Johnny Depp is back in action...” one wrote. Another declared, “Depp is back at the top of his game!” A third called it an “interesting take” and said Depp “might get an Oscar for this one, hopefully.”

A separate commenter shrugged at the crowded field of past adaptations: “So many have done this story and I still will watch it.”

That split, excitement for the star, skepticism about the sales pitch, defined the first wave of response to the trailer.

Career path from Elm Street to Scrooge

Depp’s film debut came in 1984 with “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” He became a teen idol as Tom Hanson on “21 Jump Street,” then took a major turn in 1990 with Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands.”

His Jack Sparrow run in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films brought a first Academy Award nomination. He later earned Oscar nominations for “Finding Neverland” and “Sweeney Todd,” and a Golden Globe for “Sweeney Todd.”

His last big-screen appearance cited in the report was the 2023 French historical drama “Jeanne du Barry.” He also directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” Next up, beyond “Ebenezer,” he is set to star opposite Penélope Cruz in the thriller “Day Drinker.”

Court fights that reshaped his public fight

The studio return follows years dominated by high-profile legal battles with his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

In 2020, Depp lost a U.K. libel case against The Sun over an article that called him a “wife beater.” Two years later, he faced Heard in a Virginia defamation trial tied to her 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic abuse. A jury found Heard liable for defaming Depp.

Those outcomes did not erase the damage to his standing in the industry. They did give him a clear courtroom result in Virginia after a bruising public fight, and a lane back toward major studio work now taking shape with “Ebenezer.”

Hollywood was quick to sideline Depp when the accusations dominated the news cycle. The Virginia verdict and this trailer are a reminder that audiences, not studio gatekeepers, still decide who gets another look.
