Gunfire at a Vienna, Georgia block party left two men dead and 35 injured early Sunday, with no suspect or motive yet named by investigators.
Sheriff’s deputies in Dooly County heard shots ring out around 1:25 a.m. while patrolling and raced to a neighborhood gathering on Pine Street. They found multiple people already hit by gunfire.
Two of the wounded men, ages 20 and 23, were located several blocks from the Pine Street origin point and pronounced dead at the scene. Another 35 people were hurt and taken to several hospitals in the area.
CBS News reported that Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls confirmed both of the dead were men in their early 20s. Neither the dead nor the injured have been publicly identified.
Vienna sits in southern Georgia, about 50 miles south of Macon. What began as a local block party ended in a mass-casualty crime scene before dawn.
The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office requested help from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. GBI agents joined the probe and later described the investigation as “active and ongoing.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said its Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies on both men killed. Authorities have released no information on a possible suspect, a motive, or the weapon used.
No arrests have been announced. No timeline beyond that early-morning window has been filled in. Investigators have not said how the two fatally wounded men ended up blocks away from where the shooting started.
Thirty-seven people struck by gunfire at a neighborhood party is not a mystery that fixes itself. Families in Dooly County are waiting on names, on evidence, and on someone held to account.
When a quiet southern town wakes up to two dead and three dozen wounded, the bare minimum is a full investigation that does not stall, and a justice system that treats street gunfire as the serious crime it is.
