Wynonna Judd says she and sister Ashley are taking a break from each other, a fresh strain four years after their mother’s death.
The country singer told Page Six readers, via a People cover story out Wednesday, that the sisters are not currently “connected.”
Wynonna, 62, put it plainly. Ashley Judd, 58, is living her life. Wynonna is living hers. No shared schedule. No tight circle. A break.
“She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine,” Wynonna said.
Wynonna’s upcoming record is titled “The Hard Truth.” She called it her most honest and vulnerable work. Ashley has not heard it yet.
Wynonna did not claim the songs are about their split. She did say the listen would hurt.
“I think [hearing] it would be very painful for her. Very painful,” she said. “But I also know that she knows me, that I’m so honest and so up-front.”
Ashley’s representative did not immediately respond when Page Six asked for comment.
The distance is not brand new. Wynonna said the sisters “were separated at age 14 and 18 by success” and “missed out on a lot of time together.”
Ashley also skipped Wynonna’s 2012 wedding to husband Cactus Moser.
Four years have now passed since their mother, country icon Naomi Judd, died at 76. After that loss, reports said the daughters were at odds over the will. Wynonna rejected that story in October 2022.
“I have such a great life. Ashley has a great life. Why would we be fighting over the will?”
She told People then that the sisters were “vulnerable with each other, and we’re tender,” even while they disagreed on plenty. That warmer picture is not the one she is painting now.
Home life is heavy on another front. Wynonna’s daughter, Grace Kelley, 30, is serving a 15-month sentence in Virginia after repeated arrests. Wynonna is raising Kelley’s 4-year-old daughter, Kaliyah, on her Tennessee farm with Moser.
In August, reports said Kelley was pregnant and expecting the baby in jail. Wynonna said she learned about the pregnancy from headlines and “know[s] very little” about the situation.
“I miss her desperately,” Wynonna said of Grace. She wants her daughter to “find healing” and “take a look at [her]self.”
That is the stack of pressures around the “break” with Ashley: a new album built on blunt honesty, a sister who is not in the loop, a mother gone four years, and a granddaughter under Wynonna’s roof while Grace serves time.
Wynonna did not spell out a single trigger for the current freeze. She only marked the reality. They are not connected. Ashley has her path. Wynonna has hers, farm, grandchild, record, and the hard truth she is putting on tape.
Blood and fame never guaranteed a working family. When the center fails, someone still has to raise the child and tell the truth anyway.
