A 14-year-old girl on an e-scooter was hit by a car and sent flying during a live report in Poland, and the driver fled before circling back in apparent shock.
TVP journalist Miłosz Sieliwończyk was already on a road in Kościerzyna, Poland, covering the fatal crushing of a three-year-old boy when another crash unfolded behind him. The Sun reported the car ploughed into the teen, smashed into the windscreen, and sent her flying before the motorist drove off down a side street.
The hit-and-run sequence was captured on camera. Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
Sieliwończyk described the moment the second crash cut through his report.
He said:
“At one point, I heard a bang behind me and the operator’s shout: ‘Oh Jesus!’”
He turned and saw the damage and the victim at once.
“When I turned around, I saw a car driving away with a shattered windshield and a child lying there.”
He told the cameraman to keep rolling and zoom in on the licence plate so it could be reported to police. Then the crew moved to the girl.
“We approached the girl. She was unable to stand. I saw blood stains on the scooter.”
She asked them to call her mum. Emergency services reached the scene within three minutes. Paramedics took the 14-year-old to hospital for a check-up. Her injuries were not thought to be serious. Her mother arrived a few minutes later on a bicycle.
The motorist did not stay. After striking the girl, the driver fled down a side street. A few minutes later, the person responsible came back, got out of the car, and asked if something had happened.
Sieliwończyk put it this way:
“He must have been in shock too, because he got out of the car and asked if something had happened.”
No name for the driver, no plate details, and no charges were listed in the initial account. Police were left to sort out how a live news crew covering one deadly crash ended up documenting another impact in the same stretch of road.
The crew had been there because a three-year-old boy had been fatally crushed by a car. Parents pulled the child from under the vehicle. Firefighters and then paramedics tried extensive resuscitation. The boy succumbed to his injuries.
That is the context the live report was built around when the e-scooter crash happened behind the journalist and operator.
The Kościerzyna incidents came days after another fatal crash elsewhere in Poland. Oskar Kordus, a 20-year-old defender for fourth-tier club Kania Gostyn, died after a roe deer struck by an oncoming Volkswagen flew into the path of his BMW.
The animal smashed through the front windscreen on the DW434 section between Krajewice and Grabonóg around 6 a.m. on a Monday. Kordus’s car left the road and rolled into a ditch. He was pronounced dead. The 52-year-old Volkswagen driver was unhurt.
The club posted a farewell on social media offering condolences to his family and friends.
A live crew covering one child’s death should not have to film the next crash in real time, and a driver who hits a teen and bolts before drifting back still owes the public a full accounting.
