Two giant pandas touched down in Atlanta under a U.S.-China government loan announced at the Trump-Xi summit, one of the few concrete results from the talks.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrived Sunday morning after leaving Chengdu, China, early that day on a dedicated FedEx Panda Express Boeing 777. The pair landed as part of an agreement between the Chinese and American governments and a new deal between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
NBC News reported the arrival restores giant pandas to the Georgia zoo after Atlanta said farewell to its last bears in 2024. Zoo Atlanta now joins San Diego Zoo in California and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., as one of only three U.S. zoos housing the animals.
Both bears were born in 2020 and had been kept at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Xinhua News Agency described Ping Ping, the male, as having dark black circles around his eyes and Fu Shuang, the female, as having a forehead that protrudes a bit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the pandas’ arrival on Thursday during a three-day summit with President Donald Trump. Xi cast the loan program as an example of “friendship between the Chinese and Americans.” China has long used pandas as diplomatic expressions of goodwill, and those arrangements can lapse when tensions rise.
The loan itself ranked among the few concrete outcomes of the state visit even as longer-standing differences between the two countries remained. Earlier summit coverage captured the broader diplomatic stage, including when Trump hosted a red-carpet state dinner for Xi with tech leaders and Cabinet officials in the room.
Under the agreement first announced in April, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will stay on loan to Zoo Atlanta for 10 years. Visitors will have to wait. The bears head into quarantine for about a month inside a biosecure section of the zoo’s new giant panda complex. No public opening date has been confirmed.
Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King welcomed the arrival in plain terms.
King said:
"This is a thrilling day for Zoo Atlanta and a historic moment for the City of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and beyond,"
He added:
"We are elated to welcome Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and could not be more excited about sharing that joy with our Members, guests, city, and community in the coming weeks."

For Atlanta, the practical meaning is straightforward. The city went without giant pandas after 2024. Now two young bears born in 2020 are on the ground, under a decade-long loan, after a high-profile flight arranged for the transfer.
The timing tracked the summit calendar. Xi made the announcement Thursday. The animals left Chengdu early Sunday and reached Atlanta that morning. Zoo staff move next into the quarantine period while the new complex stays closed to the public.
First lady Melania Trump also took part in the formal welcome for the Chinese leader, as recounted when Melania Trump greeted Xi at the White House during the visit.
Separate tracks from the same meetings showed the two sides trying to manage friction in other arenas. One example came when Trump and Xi set an AI incident channel while military and trade talks moved forward.
None of that erased the hard files still open between Washington and Beijing. It did produce a visible, time-limited cultural exchange that American zoos and families can see and measure.
