A 17-year-old was shot dead near his Houston high school Friday morning, and police arrested another 17-year-old after an hourslong manhunt with nearly 100 officers.
The victim, a senior at Westbury High School, was killed down the street from campus in Houston after what police say began as a dispute that escalated when a handgun came out.
By Friday evening, Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief J. Noe Diaz stood before reporters to confirm the arrest. Investigators had tracked the suspect with drones and other surveillance tools, then took him into custody on the street near a residence they had been watching in a neighborhood near Hillcroft.
ABC News reported that officers recovered a handgun from the 17-year-old suspect. Police had not yet determined whether it was the weapon used in the killing.
The search was not small. Nearly 100 law enforcement officers and personnel from multiple agencies joined the hourslong effort after the Friday morning shooting.
Chief Diaz said the teen suspected in the shooting is believed to have acted alone. He is not currently enrolled in the Houston school system.
Police said they believe a dispute between the two 17-year-olds escalated before the suspect pulled out a handgun. Investigators had not determined a motive. They also had not determined whether the victim was specifically targeted, or how the two teenagers knew each other.
What police could say about the human cost was blunt.
Police stated:
"A grandmother shouldn't be on the side of the street here, grieving for her child, for her grandchild. The mom is beside herself,"
The victim’s family was described as devastated. A senior at Westbury High School is dead. Another 17-year-old is in custody. A handgun is in evidence. The motive is still open.
City leaders moved quickly to show force and make an arrest. That is the basic job of government when a teenager is shot dead near a public high school. The harder question is why a dispute between teens ends with a gun on a Houston street in the first place, and how many more families will stand on a curb like that before the culture of easy violence is treated as the emergency it is.
