Ed Sheeran apologized for “making mistakes” and called Gaza “catastrophic and unjustifiable” after Macklemore’s removal turned his tour into a free-speech dispute.
Sheeran opened a Saturday concert at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field by addressing the controversy, ABC News reported. He told fans he never planned to become an activist musician.
The dispute began after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks during an earlier tour stop in New Jersey. Venues then told the tour promoter they would not host concerts with the rapper on the lineup.
Messina Touring Group removed Macklemore from the remaining support dates. The promoter said keeping him could have canceled the tour and affected hundreds of thousands of fans.
Sheeran had already said the decision belonged to the promoter, not him. The fight over Macklemore’s removal then followed him to Philadelphia.
From the stage, Sheeran apologized without explaining which specific mistakes he meant. His statement placed him between Macklemore, the promoter and venues unwilling to accept the lineup.
“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician,” Sheeran said. He added that the controversy had put him inside “an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech” and a deeply complex political conflict.
Sheeran addressed both the October 7, 2023, attack at Israel’s Nova Music Festival and civilian suffering in Gaza. His remarks went beyond the immediate fallout surrounding the tour.
He called what happened at the festival “horrific” and said it had compounded “centuries of Jewish pain.” He then described conditions in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.”
Sheeran said the devastation and loss of civilian lives, including children’s lives, had broken his heart. He also described himself as “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine.”
Macklemore had used an earlier appearance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to declare, “Free Palestine.” He later said that speaking those words across American stadiums was one reason he joined the tour.
The rapper also argued that criticism of Israel, claims of apartheid and accusations of genocide were not criticism of Jewish people. Those remarks fit a wider wave of celebrity activism over Palestinian causes.
But the venues controlled whether the concerts could proceed on their property. Messina Touring Group said they had notified the promoter that Macklemore could not remain on the lineup.
The promoter then faced a clear choice: remove one supporting act or risk losing upcoming shows. After discussions with unnamed stakeholders, the company chose to continue without Macklemore.
Sheeran said Macklemore’s contract was with the promoter rather than with him. That account matched Messina Touring Group’s statement taking responsibility for the lineup decision.
The other opening acts later announced that they would withdraw from the tour. Their names, the affected venues and the remaining dates were not identified.
Sheeran framed the controversy as a free-speech argument, but the promoter described a contract and venue problem. Macklemore could express his views, while venues could refuse to host him.
That distinction matters. Political speech can be lawful and still carry professional consequences when performers, promoters and property owners no longer agree on the terms.
Sheeran’s apology did not settle who pressured which venues or what he could have done differently. It did establish that the dispute had moved beyond one opening act and disrupted the larger tour.
Free speech does not erase contracts, venue decisions or consequences. Public figures who enter political fights owe their audiences plain answers about who decided what, and why.
