New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson will guest star on NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" this fall, the latest in a string of media appearances following the franchise's first NBA title in more than fifty years.
Brunson's episode, the fifth of SVU's 28th season, is set to air November 5 at 9 p.m. Eastern. Details about his character remain under wraps, but the appearance caps a summer in which the Knicks point guard has moved from the basketball court to the center of New York's entertainment world. He already turned up in the opening segment of the 78th Emmy Awards, hosted by SVU star Mariska Hargitay, and he is scheduled to host the Season 52 premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on September 26.
The SVU booking grew out of a friendship between Brunson and Hargitay that dates back years. Hargitay, a devoted Knicks fan, was courtside for the team's championship run and embraced Brunson on the court after the Knicks' historic comeback win in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the franchise's first title since 1973.
The actress and executive producer teased the casting during a Today show appearance, telling viewers:
"Don't tell anyone but see him on SVU... we got some things in the works."
Brunson had said publicly that an SVU guest spot was on his wish list after the championship. His Law & Order co-star Christopher Meloni offered a blunt endorsement of the idea:
"I don't know if you've heard, but he's a world champion, he can do whatever the h*** he wants."
Meloni's remark captures the mood around New York's basketball renaissance. A city that waited half a century for another Knicks title is now watching its championship point guard pop up across NBC's programming slate, from the Emmys to late-night comedy to prime-time drama.
The network is clearly betting on the Knicks' cultural moment. Brunson's SNL hosting gig on September 26 features musical guest Katseye. He joins Dakota Johnson, Shane Gillis, and Inde Navarrette as one of four hosts tapped to kick off the new season. The Wrap reported that SVU's 28th season premieres October 8 at 9 p.m., followed by the 26th season of the original "Law & Order" at 10 p.m.
Twelve days later, on October 20 at 7 p.m. Eastern, NBC and Peacock will carry the Knicks' season opener from Madison Square Garden against the Philadelphia 76ers. Then Brunson's SVU episode lands November 5. For NBC, it amounts to a fall built around one player and one franchise.
Dick Wolf's production machine, Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, continues to churn. Executive producers Michelle Fazekas, Kenneth Brown, Rebecca McGill, Anastasia Puglisi, and Peter Jankowski round out the SVU leadership alongside Hargitay herself. The series' cast for the new season includes Ice T, Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Kevin Kane, Aimé Donna Kelly, and Corey Cott.
Brunson's crossover summer is a reminder of what a title does for a player in the biggest media market in the country. AP News noted that the Knicks' first championship since 1973 has elevated Brunson's celebrity far beyond the basketball world. The Emmy cameo, the SNL premiere, and now an SVU guest role, all within a few months of raising the trophy, trace a path that only a New York championship can pave.
None of the parties involved have revealed what Brunson will actually do on SVU. Whether he plays a witness, a suspect, or himself remains anyone's guess. For a franchise that has run 28 seasons on gritty New York crime stories, casting the city's newest sports hero feels like a natural fit.
