Lionel Richie checked himself into an ICU after concertgoers watched him struggle through his final song at a St. Louis summer concert, the second health scare of his 2026 tour.
The 77-year-old singer headlined The Muny's annual summer finale concert in St. Louis on Saturday night, performing alongside Earth, Wind & Fire on their "Sing a Song All Night Long Tour." But witnesses told TMZ that Richie appeared to struggle toward the end of the show, eventually asking for a chair so he could sit down to perform his closing number, "All Night Long." A source close to the singer's tour told ABC News that Richie checked himself into a hospital "out of an abundance of caution" following the performance.
The hospitalization landed Richie in the ICU, where doctors were investigating mild dehydration as the likely cause of his distress, Newsmax reported. Sources told Rolling Stone the singer is doing "OK," and Just The News reported he is expected to be discharged by Tuesday.
Richie addressed the audience during the Saturday night show, explaining what had been plaguing him on tour. Newsmax captured the remarks:
"Some things have been happening on this tour that kind of shook me up a little bit, because I couldn't figure out what the h*** was going on. I went back to the doctor, and he said, You are suffering from dehydration."
The St. Louis episode was not an isolated incident. It followed a pattern of health trouble that has dogged Richie's summer tour from opening night.
On June 24, Richie experienced dizziness onstage during the tour's first concert at Grand Casino Arena in Minnesota. Videos shared online showed him performing while seated. Fox News reported that Richie was transported to a local hospital after the Minnesota show. At that opening concert, he joked with the crowd about his condition: "When you're feeling dizzy, sit your a** down."
Doctors ordered him to rest. Live Nation Chicago said Richie had been advised to "rest and return to full health," and he postponed two scheduled performances, one in Columbus, Ohio, and another in Chicago.
Richie returned to the stage on June 30 for a performance with Earth, Wind & Fire in Pittsburgh. On July 4, he posted a message on Instagram thanking fans for their support:
"Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I'm doing well, and I'm grateful for all of you."
That reassurance held for about two months. Then came Saturday night in St. Louis.
The timeline is hard to ignore. Dizziness and seated performances in Minnesota on June 24. Two canceled shows. A brief return to touring at the end of June. And now an ICU admission in St. Louis more than two months later, with the same symptoms, difficulty standing, visible fatigue, a chair brought onstage for the finale.
Richie still has shows on the calendar. He is expected to take the stage at the Wynn in Las Vegas in October and November for his "King of Hearts" residency dates. Whether those performances go forward as planned remains an open question. No cancellations or postponements have been announced for the Las Vegas run, but Breitbart noted this marks the second health incident requiring medical attention during the current tour.
Several basic facts remain unclear. The hospital where Richie is being treated has not been publicly identified. No specific diagnosis beyond possible dehydration has been disclosed. And it is unknown whether the rescheduled Columbus and Chicago shows have new dates or remain in limbo.
At 77, Richie has earned every ovation he gets. But fans watching him ask for a chair to finish "All Night Long", twice in a single summer, deserve a straight answer about whether the road is still the right place for him to be.
