Alia Shawkat puts Brad Pitt dating rumors to rest — again

Actress Alia Shawkat used a live television appearance to flatly deny years-old rumors that she and Brad Pitt were ever romantically involved, saying the speculation started simply because she stood next to him.

Shawkat, 37, appeared on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" on Aug. 16 alongside costar Kristen Stewart. Host Andy Cohen wasted no time raising the subject that has trailed Shawkat since 2019, when she and the 62-year-old Pitt were spotted together at an art exhibition in Los Angeles and at other public outings.

Cohen told Shawkat he had been "obsessed with the Brad Pitt rumors." Her answer was direct and unbothered, USA Today reported.

"He's just my friend. We became friends."

Shawkat explained that filmmaker Spike Jonze introduced the two, and that Pitt's interest in art drew them together. She acknowledged the whole thing "sounds all very chic and Hollywood" but said the friendship was straightforward.

"Everyone thought we were dating, because if you stand next to him, everyone thinks you're dating. Like, even his own mother."

Shawkat's grandmother kept the Us Weekly cover anyway

The actress added a personal detail that captured how far the tabloid cycle had reached. Her grandmother saved a Us Weekly cover that featured Shawkat and Pitt during the height of the dating speculation in 2019. Shawkat found the moment both funny and telling.

"I was like, 'I've been working in film for 30 years, you've never seen anything, but you love this.'"

It was a lighthearted line, but the point underneath it was plain. Shawkat, best known for her role on "Arrested Development," has worked steadily in Hollywood since childhood. None of that generated a fraction of the attention that a few public sightings with Pitt did.

This is not the first time she has tried to close the book on the story. In a 2022 interview with The New Yorker, Shawkat described the entire experience as "so weird." And back in 2019, a source close to Pitt told People magazine flatly that "they are absolutely just friends."

Pitt and Shawkat were spotted together repeatedly in 2019

The rumors gained traction after the two were seen together on several occasions that year. Beyond the Los Angeles art exhibition, Fox News reported the pair attended concerts and even Kanye West's opera show together. During the pandemic quarantine that followed, Shawkat reportedly biked or walked to Pitt's home, which was about ten minutes from hers. A source close to Pitt told Us Weekly at the time that "they're hanging out plenty" and that "it's all very organic and easy."

None of that, by either party's account, was romantic. Shawkat told Vulture plainly: "We're not dating, we're just friends."

Pitt, now 62, has since moved on publicly. He and jewelry executive Ines de Ramon were first romantically linked in 2022. The couple recently made their relationship Instagram official.

Celebrity rumor mills grind on whether the facts cooperate or not

Shawkat's repeated denials, spanning seven years, multiple outlets, and now a live television appearance, have done little to keep the question from resurfacing. Cohen raised it again in 2026 as though it were fresh gossip. The tabloid industry has its own incentives, and accuracy is not high on the list.

For Shawkat, the episode is a small but clear example of how the entertainment press treats proximity to a famous man as a story in itself, regardless of what the people involved actually say. She has answered the question publicly at least three times now. Each denial gets a headline. Each headline restarts the cycle.

When the facts are this simple and this consistent, the real question is why anyone keeps asking.
