The live-action Legend of Zelda movie will feature one of Sam Neill's final screen performances, a posthumous appearance that emerged alongside two other newly reported castings as the closely guarded project heads toward its 2027 release.
Neill, the New Zealand screen legend best known for the Jurassic Park franchise, died July 13 at age 78. Sources told Deadline that the actor will appear in the Nintendo and Sony co-financed feature, though his specific role has not been disclosed. The film wrapped production in April, meaning Neill completed his work before his death.
The project may mark Neill's last recorded performance. He also has posthumous roles in The Last Resort, a romantic comedy starring Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich, and in Warner/Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Which of the three constitutes his final on-screen appearance remains unclear.
Alongside the Neill news, Deadline reported that Dichen Lachman and Yvonne Strahovski have joined the cast. Lachman, widely recognized as Ms. Casey in Apple TV's Severance, will play Impa, the bodyguard and advisor to Princess Zelda. Strahovski, a multiple Emmy nominee for her portrayal of Serena Joy Waterford in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, will play a queen character, though sources were unclear on the precise role.
Earlier the same day, news broke that Australia's Uli Latukefu had landed the villain role of Ganondorf. Together, the four castings represent the first new names to surface since Nintendo announced its two leads last July: Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
Casting details for the film have been, in Deadline's words, "very closely guarded." Reps for Sony could not be reached for comment, nor could Neill's former representatives. That level of secrecy fits a franchise whose plot, too, remains under wraps.
Sony first announced the distribution and co-financing deal with Nintendo in the fall of 2023. Wes Ball, who directed entries in the Planet of the Apes franchise, came aboard to direct. Shigeru Miyamoto, the Nintendo executive who co-created The Legend of Zelda alongside Takashi Tezuka in 1986, is producing the film with Avi Arad. T.S. Nowlin penned the most recent draft of the screenplay.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release on May 7, 2027.
The project did not materialize overnight. Miyamoto told AP News that work on the Zelda film had been ongoing for a decade before the formal announcement. He acknowledged the weight of fan expectations head-on.
"I realize there are so many Zelda fans, and we cannot betray their expectations. That is a big hurdle. But we are ready."
Nintendo's confidence stems in part from the runaway commercial success of its first major film venture. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and drew nearly 170 million viewers, Fox News reported. That blockbuster also boosted Nintendo Switch and game software sales, proving the company's intellectual property could travel well beyond the console.
Arad, who heads Arad Productions Inc. and is known for his role in producing the Spider-Man films, brings Hollywood franchise-building experience to the table. Ball's track record with large-scale action properties adds another layer of proven capability behind the camera.
The Legend of Zelda launched on Nintendo in 1986. The franchise has sold more than 150 million units worldwide, making it one of the most enduring properties in gaming history. Translating that legacy into a live-action film carries obvious commercial upside, and obvious risk, given Hollywood's uneven record with video-game adaptations.
Lachman, for her part, brings genre credibility. Beyond Severance, she has Universal's horror film Other Mommy due out October 9. Strahovski's dramatic range, tested across multiple seasons of The Handmaid's Tale, suggests the film's royal court will not lack for gravitas. And Latukefu, stepping into the iconic villain Ganondorf, rounds out a cast that now spans seasoned veterans and relative newcomers like Bragason and Ainsworth.
Several questions remain unanswered. Neill's character is unknown. Strahovski's "queen" role lacks a specific name. And the plot itself is still a secret. With the film already in post-production and a May 2027 release date locked in, those answers will arrive on Nintendo and Sony's schedule, not before.
For fans of Neill, the news carries a bittersweet edge. One of cinema's most dependable screen presences will show up one more time, in a world built on adventure, courage, and the fight against a great evil. It is a fitting place to leave the stage.
