Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is receiving medical care at a Miami-area hospital after law enforcement responded to multiple reports of him livestreaming acts of self-harm, and his family is now asking the public for space.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office confirmed to USA TODAY on Aug. 4 that deputies received multiple calls about a man livestreaming self-harm on social media. Hilton, born Mario Lavandeira Jr., was "safely recovered and transported" to a local hospital, where he received medical attention. The sheriff's office said it was monitoring the situation and "providing the needed support to his family."
The next day, Hilton's family posted a statement on his personal website confirming the 48-year-old is under medical care. They did not disclose the nature of his condition or name the facility treating him.
An unverified video that circulated online appeared to show Hilton nude, covered in what looked like blood, and visibly distressed while holding a sharp object. Breitbart reported the footage showed what appeared to be cuts on his arms and torso and that TikTok pulled the video from its platform. Viewers who watched the livestream reportedly pleaded with Hilton and tried to contact authorities on his behalf.
Fox News reported that Hilton was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in Miami following the incident. His family's statement confirmed his recovery is their primary focus.
The family's statement, published Wednesday on perezhilton.com, was brief and careful. It acknowledged the flood of public concern without offering clinical details:
"Many of you have reached out with concern for Perez, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers. We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family's focus right now is on his well-being."
The family added: "If and when we are able to share any updates, we will do so with everyone as soon as we can." They requested privacy.
Hilton's talent management firm, Golden Artists Entertainment, also weighed in. Co-CEOs Dante Rusciolelli and Rebekah Kochan said they had been unable to make direct contact with Hilton but stressed that their "primary concern is Perez's health and well being, as well as the well being of his family."
This is not Hilton's first health emergency in 2026. In March, he spent several weeks in the hospital after developing an ulcer, a perforation, and sepsis. He underwent laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive abdominal procedure, after taking medication on an empty stomach triggered the chain of complications.
By June, Hilton had returned to his hometown of Miami with his mother and his three children: Mario Armando Lavandeira III, 13; Mia Alma, 11; and Mayte Amor, 8. All three were fathered through surrogacy. The move appeared to signal a period of recovery, but the August incident suggests the situation was far from stable.
Hilton launched his celebrity gossip website in 2004 and built a following by posting sharp, often cruel commentary about Hollywood figures. He became one of the first major internet-era celebrity bloggers, parlaying online notoriety into a media brand that included podcasting and social media content creation.
By 2012, Hilton appeared to reckon publicly with the cost of that approach. In an interview with The New York Times, he said:
"What's important for me is not being liked, but it is that people think I am no longer toxic to the world. I'm aware of the fact there are going to be a lot of people with lingering resentment and a lot of skeptics. And that's okay because I am not pretending to be perfect."
Those words read differently now. Whatever one thinks of Hilton's career, and plenty of the people he targeted over the years have good reason to think poorly of it, a man in a hospital under a psychiatric hold is not a punchline. He is a father of three young children, and his family is asking for the only thing they can ask for right now: time.
