Discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 stage crashes into the Moon at 5,400 mph, leaving a 100-foot crater

A spent SpaceX rocket stage slammed into the lunar surface at seven times the speed of sound after drifting through space for more than a year, and NASA says it plans to study the impact.

The 4,000-kilogram upper section of a Falcon 9 rocket struck the Moon near Einstein Crater on the daylight-facing side visible from Earth, The Sun reported. The collision, believed to have occurred around 7:35 a.m. UK time on Wednesday, generated a blast equivalent to three tonnes of TNT and carved a crater roughly 100 feet wide into the lunar surface.

NASA said the crash poses "no danger to Earth." The agency added that it would collect lunar data from the event and use it to sharpen its techniques for tracking objects in deep space. The crater, while dramatic by any earthbound standard, is too small to see with the naked eye from our planet.

A school-bus-sized piece of hardware nobody was steering

The rocket section measured roughly 45 feet long, about the size of a school bus. It launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in January 2025 as part of a mission carrying two lunar landers: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and a second lander operated by ispace, a Japanese firm.

Blue Ghost successfully touched down on the Moon in March 2025. The ispace lander was not as fortunate, it was wrecked, though the exact timing and cause of the failure remain unclear.

After separating from the main rocket body as planned, the upper stage was supposed to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. That did not happen. Instead, for reasons that have not been publicly explained, the stage drifted closer and closer to the Moon over the course of more than a year until gravity finished the job.

The impact flash lasted less than one second.

NASA and South Korean orbiters are expected to photograph the crater

Specialist telescopes were monitoring the event, and NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter along with South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter were set to release images of the impact site in the hours that followed. At the time of the report, the crash was still described as "believed" to have occurred, formal confirmation from those instruments had not yet been announced.

This marks only the second known uncontrolled rocket impact on the Moon. In 2022, a Chinese rocket segment struck the lunar far side and left two craters behind. That earlier incident drew scrutiny over the growing volume of space debris left in orbit and beyond by the world's spacefaring nations.

SpaceX is redesigning hardware to avoid exactly this problem

SpaceX is currently developing rocket components designed to return to Earth rather than float through space indefinitely. The company's reusable booster technology has already transformed the economics of launch operations, but spent upper stages, the portions that reach the highest altitudes, have historically been discarded after use.

The crash site sits on the opposite side of the Moon from the Apollo 11 landing site, where Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin first walked on the lunar surface more than half a century ago. The contrast is hard to miss: one spot on the Moon marks humanity's greatest feat of precision engineering, and now another marks the place where a piece of abandoned hardware arrived because nobody was flying it.

When governments and private companies leave four-tonne pieces of metal drifting through space with no plan to bring them home, the Moon eventually collects the bill. The only question is how many more craters it takes before accountability catches up with the hardware.
