Two monster storms churn across the Pacific as El Niño supercharges the 2026 season

Hurricane Genevieve became the first Category 5 hurricane in waters near North and Central America since 2024, and Super Typhoon Dolphin is threatening to match it, twin Pacific powerhouses fueled by El Niño's warm waters.

Genevieve's maximum sustained winds hit 160 mph overnight Sunday into Monday, July 27, making it the strongest hurricane in the eastern Pacific this year. The storm formed as a tropical depression well off the coast of Mexico on the morning of July 24, strengthened into Tropical Storm Genevieve just hours later, and reached hurricane status by Saturday. Within another 24 hours it had exploded to Category 4 with 155-mph winds before crossing the Category 5 threshold overnight.

AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva put the milestone in context:

"While eastern Pacific Major Hurricane Genevieve poses no direct threat to land, it has become the most powerful hurricane in the waters surrounding North and Central America this year and the first Category 5 hurricane since Kristy in 2024."

No direct threat to land is welcome news. But "no direct threat" does not mean no consequences. Genevieve is generating massive swells forecast to reach the west coast of Mexico and California, posing real dangers to small craft and swimmers along those coastlines.

Genevieve weakened fast, but the ocean kept churning

By Thursday morning, July 30, Genevieve had dropped to Category 1 strength with 90-mph maximum sustained winds. Forecasters expected it to continue weakening as it tracked northwest, likely falling to tropical-storm status by the weekend.

That rapid rise and fall, from tropical depression to Category 5 in roughly three days, then back down to Category 1 within three more, illustrates the kind of explosive intensification that warm Pacific waters can produce. El Niño is the engine. Warm sea-surface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific are creating ideal conditions for tropical storms to form and strengthen at startling speed.

Genevieve's brief but ferocious peak as the eastern Pacific's first Category 5 in two years underscores just how active this basin has become in 2026.

Super Typhoon Dolphin closed in on Wake Island at 160 mph

While Genevieve was fading, a second storm was picking up where it left off. Super Typhoon Dolphin formed in the central Pacific earlier in the week of July 27, north of the Marshall Islands and more than 2,000 miles southwest of Hawaii. It underwent rapid intensification from Monday to Tuesday, its wind speeds climbing fast enough to alarm forecasters tracking cross-Pacific shipping lanes.

On Wednesday, Dolphin's intensification paused briefly when the storm entered an eyewall replacement cycle, a process in which the inner eye wall collapses and a new one forms, temporarily disrupting the storm's structure. Once the cycle completed, Dolphin resumed strengthening. By Wednesday night it carried maximum sustained winds of 160 mph.

A satellite image captured Wednesday morning, July 29, showed Dolphin at 140-mph winds approaching Wake Island. Forecasters projected the typhoon would gain further strength Thursday, with winds approaching 170 mph. Some forecast guidance suggested Dolphin could reach 170 to 180 mph at peak intensity.

The storm's track called for it to pass narrowly southwest of Wake Island before curving northwestward. Heavy, dangerous surf from Dolphin was forecast to reach many islands across the region. Early the following week, the typhoon was expected to begin slowly losing wind intensity.

The surging Pacific hurricane season has already produced a string of named storms, and Dolphin's emergence in the central Pacific only broadens the geographic scope of the threat.

El Niño is driving both storms, and the season is far from over

A NOAA/CIRA satellite image dated July 27, 28 captured a striking scene: Typhoon Dolphin, a separate system named Fausto, and Hurricane Genevieve all spinning simultaneously across the Pacific Ocean. Three active cyclones spread across thousands of miles of open water, all feeding off the same warm-water plume that El Niño has pushed across the basin.

That warm plume is the common thread. El Niño's effect on the Pacific is well documented, it raises sea-surface temperatures, lowers wind shear in the eastern and central Pacific, and creates the atmospheric moisture and instability that tropical systems need to organize and intensify. This year's conditions have delivered exactly that result.

The same El Niño pattern that is supercharging Pacific storms has had the opposite effect on the Atlantic basin, where Colorado State slashed its 2026 hurricane forecast as the phenomenon gained strength. El Niño increases wind shear over the Atlantic, making it harder for hurricanes to form there. The Pacific, meanwhile, gets the full benefit of that displaced energy.

For anyone watching the Pacific this summer, the pattern is clear. Fausto became the eastern Pacific's first hurricane earlier in the season, and the storms have kept coming. Genevieve reached the highest category on the scale. Dolphin may match or exceed it. The ocean is not done.

Shipping lanes and coastlines face real risk even without landfall

Neither Genevieve nor Dolphin posed a direct threat to major population centers. That distinction matters, but it can also breed complacency. Both storms are described as dangerous for cross-Pacific shipping, vessels caught in the path of 160-mph winds and the enormous seas they generate face life-threatening conditions regardless of whether the storms ever touch a coastline.

Genevieve's swells, already rolling toward Mexico's west coast and California, carry enough energy to create hazardous conditions for swimmers and small boats hundreds of miles from the storm's center. Dolphin's heavy surf is forecast to batter islands across the central Pacific.

Wake Island, a remote U.S. territory in the western Pacific, sat directly in Dolphin's projected path. The typhoon was forecast to pass narrowly to its southwest, a margin thin enough to deliver punishing conditions even if the eye itself tracked just offshore.

El Niño seasons do not ask permission, and they do not care about political calendars. The Pacific is doing what warm water and favorable atmospheric conditions always produce: building storms, building them fast, and building them strong. The people who live, work, and travel along these coastlines and shipping routes deserve straight answers about what is coming, and preparation that matches the scale of the threat.
