Flesh-eating screwworm parasite detected 30 miles from Texas border

A New World screwworm fly, a parasite whose larvae burrow into open wounds and eat living tissue, has been found in the Mexican state of Coahuila, roughly 30 miles from the U.S. border in Texas. The detection, reported by The U.S. Sun, marks the closest confirmed presence of the pest to American soil during an outbreak that has raged across Mexico and Central America for more than a year.

A USDA spokesperson confirmed the proximity and signaled urgency:

"Mexico notified USDA of the latest New World Screwworm detection approximately 30 miles from the US border."

The numbers behind the outbreak are grim. Nearly 2,000 human infections, 1,960 reported cases, and some 171,000 animal infection reports have accumulated during the crisis. The United States has blocked cattle imports from Mexico for over a year in an effort to keep the parasite out, but the threat continues to press northward. And with Texas serving as the nation's largest cattle-producing state, the economic stakes are enormous: a 1976 screwworm outbreak in Texas hit more than 1.4 million head of cattle, and federal officials have estimated that a comparable outbreak today could cost up to $1.8 billion.

What the screwworm does, and why it matters

The New World screwworm fly targets any warm-blooded animal, humans included. Female flies lay eggs in open wounds. Once the eggs hatch, larvae feed on the living flesh around the wound. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised Americans living near livestock to watch for a specific warning sign: seeing or feeling "maggots (larvae) in or on a wound or other area of your body."

Left untreated, screwworm infestations can be fatal. The first confirmed case of human infestation during the current outbreak was reported in August, though the exact year was not specified in the USDA's public communications.

This is not some exotic, far-off concern. Coahuila sits directly across from Texas, and the detection site is closer to the U.S. border than many Texans' daily commute. The parasite does not recognize lines on a map. It follows warm-blooded hosts, cattle, deer, dogs, people, wherever they go.

USDA presses Mexico to act

The USDA spokesperson's statement to The U.S. Sun carried a pointed message for Mexican authorities. While the current detection falls within an area already covered by sterile fly dispersal, a long-standing eradication technique in which lab-raised sterile males are released to disrupt breeding, the spokesperson made clear that existing efforts are not enough:

"It is imperative Mexico increase current trapping, boost fly production, and enforce movement restrictions in their affected areas."

That language, "imperative", is not diplomatic boilerplate. It reflects a federal agency that sees its southern neighbor falling short on containment while the threat inches toward American ranches and communities.

The spokesperson also outlined the Trump administration's broader posture, stating that "the entirety of the Trump administration, in partnership with our border states, continues to exhaust all available options to ward off this threat to our country, beef industry, and national food security." U.S. Customs and Border Protection has launched an awareness campaign about the screwworm as part of that effort.

Cross-border biological threats are not new, but they demand the kind of vigilance that only works when both sides of the border cooperate. Past failures to move quickly on border security have taught hard lessons about what happens when federal agencies wait too long to act.

The economic threat to American beef

Texas alone accounts for a massive share of U.S. cattle production. A screwworm incursion would not simply mean sick animals, it would mean quarantines, trade restrictions, slaughter orders, and a cascade of costs hitting ranchers, feedlots, and consumers.

The 1976 Texas outbreak offers a sobering benchmark. More than 1.4 million cattle were affected. Adjusted for today's industry, federal estimates put the potential damage at $1.8 billion. That figure does not account for the broader disruption to supply chains, meat prices, or the livelihoods of ranching families who already operate on thin margins.

The year-long import ban on Mexican cattle is a defensive measure, but it carries its own costs. American feedlots that historically relied on Mexican feeder cattle have had to find alternatives. The longer the outbreak persists south of the border, the longer those disruptions last.

Invasive biological threats to American agriculture are a growing concern on multiple fronts. The spotted lanternfly from China, for instance, is poised for a population surge across the country, threatening vineyards, orchards, and hardwood forests. The screwworm, however, poses a more immediate and visceral danger, it feeds on living animals and people, not just crops.

A whole-of-government response, on paper

The USDA spokesperson described the federal response in sweeping terms:

"USDA, CBP, and the whole-of-government are fully prepared to contain and eradicate the pest should it cross our borders."

That is a reassuring statement. Whether it holds up under pressure depends on factors that remain unclear. The USDA has not released the specific notice or document underlying the Coahuila detection. The exact trapping site within Coahuila has not been publicly identified. And the geographic scope of the 1,960 human infection cases and 171,000 animal reports, whether those figures cover all of Mexico and Central America or a narrower zone, has not been specified.

These gaps matter. Ranchers along the Texas border need to know how close the active infestation zone extends. Pet owners, hunters, and anyone who works outdoors near the border needs to understand their risk. The CDC's advice to watch for larvae in wounds is useful, but it is reactive guidance, by the time you see maggots, the infestation has already taken hold.

Disease and pest outbreaks that cross international boundaries demand transparency and speed. The ongoing Ebola outbreak in Congo, which has killed dozens and raised cross-border fears, illustrates how quickly a localized crisis can become a regional emergency when containment falters.

What remains unanswered

Several questions hang over this situation. What absolute date does the "Friday" detection refer to? What specific surveillance data led Mexico to notify the USDA? Is the sterile fly dispersal program operating at sufficient scale, or is it merely a holding action while the infestation expands?

The USDA's public language suggests frustration with Mexico's pace. Telling a sovereign nation it is "imperative" to boost trapping, increase sterile fly production, and enforce movement restrictions is a step beyond polite cooperation. It reads like a warning that the U.S. may need to take more aggressive unilateral steps if Mexico does not deliver.

For Americans living and working along the southern border, these are not abstract policy questions. A screwworm incursion would mean real wounds, real livestock losses, and real economic pain in communities that can least afford it. Travel advisories and safety warnings are routine for Americans abroad, but this threat sits on the doorstep of Texas ranch country.

The Trump administration says it is prepared. Mexico has been told what it needs to do. The parasite, meanwhile, does not negotiate, it just keeps moving north.

Thirty miles is not a buffer. It is a countdown.
