A nurse at VCU Health in Virginia has been dismissed after posting disturbing videos on social media that suggested harmful actions against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The nurse, employed by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health, uploaded a series of videos on a now-deleted TikTok account under the username Redheadredemption. These clips, which circulated widely on X after being shared by the LibsOfTikTok account, prompted an investigation by VCU Health and VCU Police, announced on Tuesday morning. By Tuesday night, VCU Health confirmed the individual was no longer employed and stated they had met all reporting obligations under Virginia state law.
While under investigation, the nurse was placed on administrative leave and barred from VCU facilities or patient interactions, per policy. The content of the videos sparked significant public concern due to their nature.
The videos in question contained explicit suggestions for harming ICE agents. In one, captioned with hashtags like "resistance" and "sabotage," the nurse proposed using syringes filled with saline or succinylcholine—a drug causing temporary muscle paralysis—as a deterrent tactic.
In another clip, captioned "resist," the nurse suggested creating a toxic solution with poison ivy or oak to spray on faces and hands using a water gun, Fox News reported. A third video, under the hashtag "staytoxic," advised dating ICE agents via apps like Tinder to spike their drinks with laxatives and gather personal information.
These ideas, presented as activism, cross a dangerous line from free speech into potential incitement. The notion of physically harming or incapacitating federal agents raises serious ethical and legal questions about the boundaries of protest.
VCU Health moved quickly once the videos gained attention. Their statement underscored a commitment to safety, saying, "We prioritize the health and safety of anyone who comes to us for care."
They also distanced themselves from the nurse’s actions, noting, "The content of the videos is highly inappropriate and does not reflect the integrity or values of our health system." This response shows an institution unwilling to tolerate behavior that undermines public trust.
Public outrage, fueled by the viral spread on X, likely pressured a rapid resolution. While the nurse’s termination may satisfy many, it doesn’t erase the initial damage done by such reckless online behavior.
