Brace yourself for a jaw-dropping misuse of taxpayer money that could make even the most frugal among us wince.

A stunning report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has exposed billions in questionable rental assistance payments distributed during the tenure of former President Joe Biden, with funds going to deceased individuals and potential non-citizens amid glaring oversight gaps, as Fox News reports.

This financial fiasco unfolded as HUD disbursed roughly $50 billion in federal rental aid to non-federal entities in fiscal year 2024 alone. Of that staggering sum, a hefty $5.8 billion was flagged as questionable in the agency’s latest financial review.

Shocking Recipients of Taxpayer Funds Revealed

Digging deeper, HUD’s internal analysis, detailed in its fiscal year 2025 Agency Financial Report and obtained by the New York Post, uncovered that around 30,000 deceased tenants received payments. Some were even actively enrolled in programs or got funds after passing away.

The report also pointed to thousands of potential non-citizens among the recipients. These problematic disbursements weren’t isolated, with significant chunks concentrated in places like New York, California, and Washington, D.C., though deceased recipients popped up in all 50 states.

HUD’s method of discovery was a tech-savvy cross-check, using automation to match its records against a U.S. Treasury database. That process alone identified over 30,000 questionable cases tied to deceased individuals. It’s a start, but one can’t help but ask why such basic safeguards weren’t in place sooner.

Biden-Era Oversight Blamed for Failures

The report doesn’t shy away from pointing fingers, criticizing the Biden administration for pushing out funds with what appears to be shockingly lax oversight. A directive to distribute aid quickly, per HUD, left the agency without the proper tools to ensure compliance with complex rental assistance rules.

Compounding the issue, HUD placed immense trust in non-federal entities to handle these funds responsibly. The result? A mess of improper payments that now demands a full investigation to untangle.

“A massive abuse of taxpayer dollars not only occurred under President Biden’s watch, but was effectively incentivized by his administration’s failure to implement strong financial controls resulting in billions worth of potential improper payments,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner.

HUD Steps Up to Address Fraud

Now, HUD is scrambling to clean up the chaos, launching efforts to confirm whether outright fraud occurred. The department is weighing whether to pause or revoke funding to problematic recipients.

Further action could include criminal referrals and other enforcement measures if fraud is verified. “HUD will continue investigating the shocking results and will take appropriate action to hold bad actors accountable,” Turner added.

The scale of this issue is staggering when you consider that $5.8 billion could have supported countless vulnerable families who genuinely needed help. Instead, it may have lined the pockets of those gaming the system—or worse, gone to accounts no longer tied to the living.

Restoring Integrity to Taxpayer Programs

HUD insists it’s implementing new processes to halt funding where needed and hold wrongdoers accountable. It’s a step in the right direction, but rebuilding trust in these programs will take more than promises after such a colossal oversight failure.

The department also hinted at building on efforts from prior administrations to strengthen program integrity. While the focus remains on aiding those in need, taxpayers deserve assurance that their dollars aren’t being squandered through preventable errors or worse.

In the end, this HUD report serves as a sobering reminder of what happens when accountability takes a backseat to hasty policy rollouts. If there’s a silver lining, steps are being taken to right the ship. Still, for every dollar misspent, a family is wondering why help never came.
