Former Rep. Matt Gaetz just got blindsided by a wild question about a supposed romance with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, as the Daily Mail reports.

In a nutshell, Gaetz, a staunch MAGA supporter, was grilled on Carlson’s web show about whether he ever dated the Democratic Socialist Ocasio-Cortez, an idea that started as a jest back in May 2023 and left Gaetz visibly stunned.

For hardworking taxpayers footing the bill for congressional antics, this kind of gossip distracts from real issues like fiscal responsibility, especially when past investigations into Gaetz’s conduct have already cost significant public resources for legal probes and House Ethics Committee reports.

Origins of the Unlikely Rumor

The rumor of a Gaetz-Ocasio-Cortez fling first popped up in May 2023, when Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld tossed it out as a joke on "The Five."

At the time, Gaetz, 43, was married, and Ocasio-Cortez, 36, was engaged to her fiancé, Riley Roberts, making the speculation seem far-fetched even as humor.

Still, the two did forge an unexpected alliance in Congress, working together on bipartisan initiatives before political tensions shifted their dynamic.

Capitol Events Alter Dynamics

Gaetz noted that Ocasio-Cortez was once “incredibly chummy” with GOP colleagues, a camaraderie evident in a Jan. 3, 2023, photo of them on the House floor.

But after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol unrest, Gaetz observed a stark change, saying she “treated us all like we had horns or something” in the aftermath.

Ocasio-Cortez has spoken of the trauma she endured during that chaotic event, a claim Gaetz dismissed as “bad performance art” during his chat with Carlson.

Carlson’s Direct Question Stuns Gaetz

Fast forward to Monday’s interview, and Carlson, 56, didn’t hold back, bluntly asking, “Did you ever date her?” to which Gaetz firmly replied, “I did not, no.”

Carlson pressed further with “Did you try?” only for Gaetz to shut it down with a quick “No, and uh, not my cup of tea,” calling the whole speculation “childish.”

While the exchange made for spicy viewing, it’s a reminder that personal rumors can overshadow substantive policy debates that conservatives crave.

Gaetz’s Turbulent Political Journey

Gaetz’s own career has been a rollercoaster, with his resignation from the House in November 2024 after a failed nomination by Donald Trump for attorney general, derailed by past allegations and a federal investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship.

Though the Justice Department declined to charge him, and despite an associate’s conviction on related charges, the House Ethics Committee’s 2021 report on sex trafficking allegations continues to cast a shadow—one conservatives insist must be fully aired, not buried.

Now hosting a show on One America News, Gaetz, who welcomed a son with wife Ginger in August 2024, seems to be pivoting to media, but the past still lingers as a cautionary tale for political accountability.
