Democrat Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota just unleashed a verbal barrage against the Second Amendment that has conservatives shaking their heads.
Walz used a Tuesday press conference to rail against gun rights while signing executive orders aimed at curbing gun violence, all while dodging heat from a massive welfare fraud scandal, as the Daily Caller reports.
This drama kicked off earlier this year with tragedy striking Minnesota, including a horrific school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on Aug. 27, where a shooter took the lives of two children and injured 17 others before taking their own life.
The suspected shooter, a biological male identifying as transgender, had posted disturbing online videos showcasing firearms and threatening messages targeting President Donald Trump.
Adding to the state’s unrest, Democrat State Rep. Melissa Hortmann and her husband were tragically murdered in June, while another lawmaker and his spouse were wounded in a separate incident.
Shockingly, the accused killer of Hortmann, a former political appointee of Walz, claimed in a letter to the FBI that he acted on the governor’s behalf, as reported by the New York Daily News.
Fast forward to Tuesday, and Walz stood before reporters, not just to mourn these losses, but to push a controversial agenda with new executive orders.
These orders establish a safety council and mandate insurance companies to hand over data related to firearms, which Walz says will help research the public health costs of gun ownership.
“We are going to use that data to do the research the federal government is too cowardly to do, to understand that this is a public health crisis,” Walz declared during the press conference. Well, isn’t that a convenient way to sidestep legislative gridlock and paint law-abiding gun owners as the problem?
Walz didn’t stop there -- he took direct aim at Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature for blocking a ban on what he and other gun-control advocates call “assault weapons.”
Let’s be clear: the National Shooting Sports Foundation notes that these are semi-automatic firearms firing one round per trigger pull, not the machine guns of Hollywood fantasy. So, is this about safety, or just another progressive buzzword to chip away at constitutional rights?
Walz also vented frustration at the broader gun culture, claiming, “We are the murder gun capital of the planet, because people have made the decision to protect gun manufacturers.” That’s a bold accusation, but where’s the nuance on personal responsibility or the root causes of violence?
While Walz plays the crusader for public safety, he’s got a billion-dollar elephant in the room -- a welfare fraud scandal that’s raised serious questions about his administration’s oversight.
Some state employees have even accused Walz of “systemic” retaliation against whistleblowers who flagged the fraud schemes. If true, that’s a troubling backdrop to his moralizing on gun control -- shouldn’t cleaning house start at home?
At the end of the day, Walz’s fiery rhetoric and executive overreach might energize his base, but for many Minnesotans and Second Amendment defenders, it feels like a distraction from deeper governance failures. With tragedies mounting and trust eroding, the governor’s focus on gun restrictions over comprehensive solutions leaves a bitter taste. Isn’t it time for leadership that unites rather than divides?
