Ilhan Omar says ICE agents stopped her son in Minnesota

It’s not every weekend that a member of Congress claims federal agents pulled over her own family, but that’s exactly what Rep. Ilhan Omar says happened at a Minnesota Target.

The progressive lawmaker alleges that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents stopped and questioned her son as part of what she calls a racially charged immigration crackdown across the state, as the New York Post reports.

According to Omar, this incident is part of a broader sweep in Minnesota, which has the largest Somali-American community in the United States.

ICE Questions Omar’s Son After Target Visit

Omar describes how her son was stopped by ICE agents after making a purchase at Target, claiming that agents specifically asked him about his citizenship status.

Her account states that her son was able to produce his passport and was released immediately, a fortunate outcome that some might say should have ended the matter then and there.

Omar claims her son “always carries” his passport, a habit that suggests he’s accustomed to being subject to extra scrutiny, but also a decision that many would agree is simply smart preparedness in today’s climate.

Allegations Of Racial Profiling Emerge

Adding fuel to the fire, Omar reports that ICE agents previously “entered a mosque where her son and others were praying,” before apparently changing their minds and departing empty-handed.

The context for all of this, according to law enforcement, is a statewide campaign in response to a $1 billion fraud scandal targeting Minnesota’s welfare system -- a scandal President Trump has emphasized involves members of the Somali community.

President Trump hasn’t been shy on the matter, stating bluntly about Somali immigrants, “we don’t want them,” and branding Omar herself as “garbage.”

Congresswoman Pushes Back Against Federal Enforcement

Omar sees things differently, denouncing the crackdown as "state-sanctioned racial profiling" and alleging "political intimidation" by federal authorities.

She told one Minnesota radio station, “I had to remind him just how worried I am...they are racially profiling, they are looking for young men who look Somali that they think are undocumented.”

In a letter sent to top officials, she went a step further, accusing agents of “blatant racial profiling” and using “an egregious level of unnecessary force” in their Minnesota operations.

Somali Community Feels The Heat

For the record, Minnesota’s Somali population is estimated at over 107,000 residents, most of whom Omar says are U.S. citizens -- “over 90%,” by her count.

Omar herself immigrated to America from Somalia in the 1990s and became a citizen in 2000, giving her plenty of skin in the game for this debate.

She has also been quick to blame state officials, not immigration enforcement, for failing to set guardrails on public programs and thus enabling fraud in the first place.

Political Drama Shows No Signs Of Letting Up

ICE declined to provide a comment when asked for its side of the story, leaving only Omar’s narrative front and center -- for now.

Meanwhile, her family continues to make headlines, with her daughter previously arrested during campus protests and both children joining her on the stage for a recent Democratic Party primary victory celebration.

No matter which side you’re on, expect this clash between federal enforcement and progressive politics to keep sparking fireworks in Minnesota’s uneasy cultural mix.
