Washington governor under scrutiny over plans for fundraiser with Tim Walz

Is Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson tone-deaf to the stench of scandal, or just in dire need of campaign cash?

Reports are swirling that Ferguson is planning a fundraising luncheon in Seattle on Tuesday, with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a figure currently mired in a massive welfare fraud controversy back in his home state, though Ferguson’s team remains tight-lipped on confirming the event, as Just the News reports.

The ticket price for this cozy get-together is reportedly a modest $50, a bargain for rubbing elbows with political heavyweights -- or perhaps a low bar for buying influence.

Walz Scandal Casts Shadow Over Event

Let’s unpack the baggage Walz brings to the table. Under his watch since taking office in January 2019, Minnesota has seen hundreds of millions of dollars siphoned from social welfare programs in a fraud scheme so brazen it’s now under congressional investigation.

Even more troubling, some reports suggest a portion of the stolen funds -- potentially up to $1 billion taken by a Somali fraudster -- may have been funneled to a terror group, raising serious questions about oversight on Walz’s watch.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has demanded communications from Walz and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to get to the bottom of this fiscal fiasco, yet here he is, potentially headlining a fundraiser far from home.

Fundraiser Timing Sparks Republican Criticism

Washington State Republican Party chair Jim Walsh isn’t mincing words about the optics of this event, especially given the timing amidst Walz’s growing troubles.

“Ferguson is being very shady about this fundraising visit by his scandal-plagued Minnesota colleague,” Walsh texted The Center Square, adding that “the growing crisis of government-benefit fraud consuming Minnesota politics right now makes the timing of this money grab questionable.”

Walsh, who also serves in the state House of Representatives, even speculated that Ferguson’s silence on the matter hints at desperation for funds. It's hardly a ringing endorsement of confidence in one’s own campaign coffers.

Democrats Defend Controversial Guest Choice

On the other side of the aisle, Washington State Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad is rolling out the welcome mat for Walz, seemingly unfazed by the storm surrounding him.

“We are delighted to have Governor Walz visit Washington state to support Governor Ferguson,” Conrad emailed The Center Square, praising both leaders for their “exemplary work” during challenging times.

While Conrad’s cheerleading paints a rosy picture, one wonders if ignoring the elephant in the room -- namely, Walz’s fraud scandal. Does more harm than good to the party’s credibility with taxpayers weary of government mismanagement.

Social Media Buzz and Public Skepticism

Word of the luncheon first leaked on social media, with a Facebook post by Kate Martin, reportedly an editor at The Seattle Journal, sharing a screenshot of the event announcement, and by Katherine Bobman, Ferguson’s finance director, who also posted about Walz’s visit.

Public reaction online hasn’t been kind, with comments on Martin’s post dripping with disbelief and frustration over Ferguson’s choice of guest. Though the event’s location remains under wraps, it is to be revealed just 72 hours prior.

Despite repeated attempts by The Center Square to get clarity through emails and phone calls, Ferguson’s office has dodged all inquiries, leaving many to wonder if this fundraiser will even happen -- or if it’s just a poorly timed rumor that’s already backfiring.
